Monty Rim Replacement

Hey all,

Today I was at the RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) Juggling Convention (kicked butt, btw!). There, I did a =~4.5 foot drop onto a hard floor and killed my Monty rim (pretty badly.) I have had this uni for just over a month and a half, and I already busted the wheel, so I’d like something stronger. I heard that Alex makes a strong rim that fits the Monty tire (I went to their site www.alexrims.com) but couldn’t tell which ones would fit what rim (they don’t mention the diameters, as far as I could tell). So I was wondering if such a stronger rim existed, and if so, where could I get it?

Thanks,

~Charles

Re: Monty Rim Replacement

You’re thinking of the Alex DX32 Downhill rim, that comes in a 20" (actully
like 15" or something) diameter. I heard that these rims are hard to find
outside of Canada… but you should be able to get them at any bike shop that
deals Norco bicycles, (and unicycles for that matter). I believe Unicycle.com
has them too. Hope this helps!

Maybe it’s not the rim? There are plenty of determing factors like how much air you had in the tube, how you landed, etc… Think about these factors before ruling out the Monty.

Before doing the drop, I noticed that several of the spokes were loose, so I fixed them. Also, one or two of the spokes were already kinda coming out. This might be because the rim needed some attention a while back and I didn’t give it, or because it’s a feeble rim… I also noticed that unlike some of my other rims, in the monty you could notice where the rim had been put together (making it a circle)… are rims that don’t have this visible any better than the ones that do?

I’ll post some pictures of the uni when I get them…

Thanks for the replies,

Charles

Re: Monty Rim Replacement

I would have said that the Alex DX32 rim is not stronger than the Monty,
possibly as strong but my guess if not
as strong because it has a lower section. if you fitting it as a
replacement you will need to change your spoke pattern from 3 cross to 2
cross to allow for the different section. You may also need to drill out
the rim depending on what spokes were used to build your original wheel.
I certainly agree that is probably lack of maintainance (combined with the
jump!) that has caused the failure. All wheels should have their tension
checked after a few uses from new and in most cases require tightening. If
you ever have loose spokes do not do any jumping on your unicycle, simple
rule.
The Rim has been on the market for many years but as branded as an Onza rim
because it was commissioned by them originally. We stock it in the UK if
you are wanting one.

I was reading about a new mod rim at trialsin.com here is a link
http://www.trialsin.com/special/sframe.htm
it’s made by arrow racing and is supose to be strong. it’s the third or fourth thing on the list.

monty rims

hey man,

ive been riding with monty rims on my trials bike and my trials unicycle without fuss for the past three years, i still have the original rim on the bike, with a few little dents in the sidewall.

How did i do this? well, first off i built the wheel three cross, strong, stainless nipples, high tension. then i make sure i check the tension every few rides.

Most trials bikers will tell you they have had no problems with the monty rims, theyre among the strongest rims out there. and only break when,

Tension in the spokes is not even, leading to excess pressure on one part of the rim, or
too low tyre pressure, resulting in bottoming the tyre on the rim, leading to excess pressure and breakage etc.

If you had a few spokes loose, chance is the wheel was in need of attention, which was why it broke, take care of your wheels and they last ages, you wont find a stronger mod trials rim!

Ive pulled of many 4 foot uni drops and over 10 foot bike drops on the rims with no probs, most probs with my cranks though.

As for other rims which fit the monty mod tyre,

Alex dx32
arrow mod rim,

Thats it!
you can lever a monty tyre onto a normal rim with metal tyre levers, but you lose air space in the tyre and youll never get it back on!

Hope ive helped. and yes, you can see the seam on monty rims, theyve always been like this!

Huh, so I guess I just didn’t care for my wheel at the right time… I’m going to try out the Alex rim anyhow, just 'cause it’s supposed to be as strong as the Monty and it’s black so it matches my frame.

Thanks for the informative reply.
