Has anyone had any bad luck with Monty 158mm cranks while using them for muni? I know Sofa had a problem with his but I know he used them for more than just muni. Just wondering what everyone’s opinion on these were.
Haven’t tried 'em. The product reviews scared me off.
I didn’t use them for anything more than MUNi, except maybe a little bit of trials.
It’s the shitty hub/crank interface on the left crank that gave out
Sorry Brian, I thought you used them for more trials than that. Has nobody else used these cranks?
Mine are good so far, but I don’t think I’m that hard on them. They came loose once but tightened up OK. A buddy had his work loose too. It might be worth tightening them (to 40 ft-lbs) after every ride or so 'till they get broken in to the hub - the Aluminum of the crank is much softer than the steel hub and will flow around it with use.

Oh, here’s another idea - I’m sure Darren has sold piles of these things. Why not ask him what kind of feedback (i.e. returns) he’s had?

Re: Monty Cranks
Club members here bought 4 Munis from Darren all with Monty cranks and all
have developed problems within a year to the point that one upgraded to
Profile and one to KH. The others will be upgraded to either KH or Profile
as soon as they become un-rideable. The last I heard Darren doesn’t sell
Monty cranks any more due to the poor feedback he has received.
