Moab Prep

I just changed my oil in preparation for my 15 hour drive to spend a week in Moab. WOOT!

Man I wish I could go but my schedule won’t allow it this year.:frowning: I hope you all get lots of pics and video! AT least I’m doing my qualifying ride for RTL this weekend!

What route are you taking? Mapquest says 16 hours; you planning on speeding?

If you pass through Salem, pick up jagur.

Is there any other way to drive?

This route: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/Eugene+OR/Moab+UT/

Taking 20 across central Oregon, not I84 through Portland, so no Salem.

I got the 15 hours because I’m driving to SLC, overnighting, and then driving on to moab. The times are 12 and change and 3 and change and I rounded down, not up. It probably will be closer to 16 hours - but no one goes speed limit across central Oregon either. I’ll fudge it just a little bit.

That’s quite a drive. If I remember right it only takes us about 12 hours total from the middle of Montana…

I’ve been preparing for Moab by NOT riding. :frowning:

I’ve still got to buy a couple of tripods and a bunch of tapes. Other than that I think I’m all set to go!

Oh wait, I need to get a haircut really bad, I can’t see when I put my helmet on…

Only 8 more days!!

Seamus

It’s not too bad by my standards. I drive back and forth between here and Iowa at least once a year. That’s 32 hours.

How come I live so much closer (Sacramento vs. Oregon) and yet Google Maps estimates the drive time for me at 13 hrs?

But I’m flying to SLC and driving from there, which brings the total door-to-door time (including drive to airport +waiting) down to something like only 12 hours.

Congrats on saving an hour of travel time each way. If you were to speed like Seager, you’d save no time. Flying is saver and more convenient though.

18 hour drive for me, but we’re stopping at Jackson Hole, WY, so make that 27 hours to Moab.

Oh, yeah, I think I read your first post wrong and was thinking it was like 18 hours or something.

I’m about 8,900 hours away! That’s because I won’t be able to go 'till the '09 Munifest.:stuck_out_tongue:

I would only have been 18 for you to go straight from mpls? It took us 17 even to go from Ames (a half hour north of des moines on I35), and we’re almost 4 hours straight south of you.

18 direct and nonstop going through Des Moines. You must’ve gotten lost in the cornfields. Google maps says 15 hours from Ames.

6 hours to moab from my house

I’m glad I live sort of close to it compared to 18 hours driving some of you guys have to do

Be careful on highway 20 between Bend and Burns. It can be a speed trap. I’ve gotten two speeding tickets in my driving career and one of them was on that stretch of highway 20 going to Bend from Idaho. That was about 15 years ago or so. I haven’t taken that route to get to Idaho or Moab or anything else since then. Bend has missed out on several potential overnight stays since then and the Deschutes Brewery has missed out on many meals and pints. Their loss. I now always go up north on 84 through Pendelton and Baker City. It’s almost impossible not to speed on that stretch of highway 20 at some point unless you have cruise control (I don’t). It’s up and down rolling hills and at some point the car is going to go over 55.

I’m not going to Moab this year. Hopefully next year.

I prefer to drive to Moab. The drive requires an overnight stay somewhere along the way. But it gets done on my schedule. I don’t have to worry about catching a plane. I don’t have to rent a car. I can eat at strange diners along the way. Considering that you have to drive 5 hours anyways after getting to the airport in SLC, why not just drive an additional 12 hours or so? Plus you get to carry more gear if you drive rather than fly.

Okay, it’s been a long time! Since I’ve seen you at least.

This thread is making me think the same thing. Except you kill an entire day that way. When we fly we usually also get to ride the same day.

I do have cruise, but I set it at about 60.

Last time I drove I made it from Eugene to Provo (south of SLC) before I needed to overnight. I do it cheaper, though, packing my lunches and sleeping in the bed of my truck at truckstops.

But driving is nice. My truck will have 5 unicycles, 2 tents, a campstove and a grill, fuel, tons of juggling gear, riding gear for two, and a full toolset. I’m also picking up someone in SLC and carrying his gear too. (lots of supplies since we’re staying for a full week)

Oh man, this thread is getting me excited for Moab. I went last year for the first time (I’d only been unicycling for about 3 months then), and this year’s going to be alot more fun seeing as I’m WAY better than back then.

Hooray Moab

I’m so excited I’m going to post the short video of moab that I made a few years ago.
