I did not play this time, though the halfinch was fairly obvious and rather funny. Your post did force me to do a little research on the internet. I’m very familiar with the Kingfisher as they are common near my home but I thought for certain that they were NOT ground nesting birds. My research did, however, confirm that they are indeed ground nesters. I always learn a little something from your posts.

…although somewhat unusual ground nesters. I have always thought ground nesting to mean “on the ground”, but could be wrong about the definition. Unlike lapwings they do not nest on the ground but in tunnels dug into it. There was a GREAT wildlife program about otters on TV a few days ago, filmed in the area where the story of “Tarka” was set and written. It included some kingfisher footage.

PS I saw a peregrine today in Manchester…fantastic.
