Microsoft XP Home Edition Problem- Need Advice

I have had this annoying problem that has been recurring for almost a year. When I restart my computer I have to Go through the registration process again with Microsoft. It works fine afterwards, but just annoying like I said.

I took in to the place that built it, and it worked once or twice, the went back to doing it again. This time I took it in for an unrelated problem, and they decided to try to fix it again.

One option was to reformat. Personally, I am not to excited about this, since I have a lot of crap that I would have to reload. They said the only thing they can do is reload the data, not the programs.

Any of you Windows, or computer gurus have any constructive comments.

Re: Microsoft XP Home Edition Problem- Need Advice

I haven’t had experience with this particular problem, but the most common “fix-all” for serious Windows problems is the reformat / rebuild operation. Otherwise, you’d have someone monkey around with your Windows Registry, which could work, or could lead to a complete disaster, in which case, a rebuild is absolutely necessary!

It’s best to have your important files on a separate drive (physical or logical) to allow for a rebuild whenever necessary. If you’ve got a CD or DVD burner, or tape drive, you could also dump your files onto another media.

Of course, you’re backing up your important files anyway, right?

Now, if you’ve got infinite time and patience, you could try working your way through Microsoft tech. support… http://support.microsoft.com/ They’ve been helpful to me in the past…

I’ll do some search in a tech forum I use…
and post a thread there … see what they say …

It’ll take some time thou …

I’m not a guru, but since you’ve already indicated your willingness to post a support question on the internet, I’d suggest posting it in a place with a lot more experts.

http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx

These newsgroups are filled with the computer equivalents of John Childs, and if you put in a decent description of your problem in the right newsgroup (perhaps the English/Windows/New Users), chances are good you’ll get an answer w/o having to call MSFT tech support.

This does not sound like a “reformat is the only option” problem to me. There is a file someplace that is instigating that action, and it can be found and deleted.

No one has seen this problem of yours at the forum I belong.

There are some suggestions though.

(Ignore the snide posts. All forums have asshats these days.)

This tech site has some very knowledgeable folks.
It may be that the ‘right’ person hasn’t seen your post yet.

The best answer is the last one.
I make backup images everytime I install something new.
(or around every 3 weeks)

So, if something goes bad, I can ‘restore’.

This might help you determine what is hosing your OS.
