Microsoft Student Discounts

I just have to brag…

I just legally bought Microsoft Office Professional 2003 via my school district’s www.Journeyed.com student discount thing for $79.98, when it’s sold retail for over $500.

Yep, I just got a $500 product for $80. One word: w00t.

So if you’re in school, go to www.journeyed.com/select, pick your state, and see if your district is eligable for these discounts!

See Evan, going to public school has it’s perks…

Too bad its 3 years old.
Now lets make a list of people that have used a torrent to get it for free.

or peole who got a legal copy of office 97 or 2000 for $10

Me

Office 97 and 2000 are no longer getting security updates. Any security bugs found are not being fixed in the older versions. That makes the old versions worth less than $10 if you’re interested in keeping your computer from being owned.

It isn’t available for my school.

Pfffft, small change.

I got Visual Studio 6 Enterprise Edition, worth 2,700 USD, for absolutely nothing while at university as part of the Microsoft university partnership.

I could have got whatever version of Office was around at the time as well, but meh, notepad and calculator are good enough for me.

Phil

I get software from Microsoft sent to me for free because when you beta test fot them they give you stuff:D

I wonder how I could have security problems with the old versions of Office? it’s not like I allow them to go anywhere near the internet…

There are exploits that attack the Office file formats. If you get an MS Office document in an email attachment or a link to an online you can end up with an infected document that allows an atacker to own your computer. If you share documents with coworkers you have the same problem.

Powerpoint slides, Excel files, Word documents, they’re all vulnerable if you’re running an old version of Office.

so, let me get this straight…

a friend emails me a word document. I use mozilla suite as my email client, and I save the word document on my hard drive. I then open the word document in MS Word, which is prohibited by my firewall from accessing the internet.

how does someone “own” my computer this way?

Fixed.

See: OpenOffice.org

O yeah, openoffice, excelent app, forgot all about it.

Maestro, you need to get a clue and quit picking on me in my threads. You could have politely mentioned Open Office, without all the mean and harrassing additional garbage. I don’t put up with that kind of thing at all anymore. I shouldn’t have to ignore something like that because there should be none in the first place. Your post has been referred to Gilby via the harrassing post button.

Don’t take offense from people on the internet; it’s not worth the effort with someone you don’t know and will likely never see in person.

OpenOffice.org for the win, though.

That made me chuckle.

Lay off the coffee, kid. Agitation, excitement and irritability are symptoms of caffiene overdose.

Edit: This isn’t a vendetta against you, Ty… I would’ve posted the exact same response no matter who the original author was… I fly my anti-MS flag whenever I can.

Seriously, you had a much cooler head on your shoulders not one year ago… now you’re back to being all touchy… what gives?

Maybe it’s lack of coffee? I quit coffee at the end of the school year in June. Anyway, I just get edgy when you get all jiggy with my threads. But hey, we can be buddies. We good?

So does limewire. Fag.

After reading this and the things he posts in the trading post I must wonder, are there any posts by him that are positive? and not mean?
