Mega Tire

Hello all,
My Primo 20" V-Monster that I got with my unicycle was getting too
worn, so I decided to get another tire, I know that unicycle tires
(well freestyle ones) are supposed to be high pressure, so I bought an
Odyssey Elm street tire, which is rated at 120psi, heavy duty, self
locking bead. I got the tire the other day and found it to be so hard
that I could probably of ridden it without any air in. It also weighed
about twice as much as my previous tire. After pumping it up to about
50 psi by hand I tootled off to the local texaco and used their
compressor to get it up to 100psi, I was too frightened to go any
higher.
It rode incredibly well that hard but upon returning to the unicycle
later on that day I noticed the thing was flat. The crappo inner tube
I bought from Wilko’s had split under the pressure. I went home that
weekend (I’m at university) and went into the local cycle/BMX shop and
bought a thorn proof tire which is basically twice as thick as normal
inner tubes and about twice as heavy, this thing will require serious
manpower to get it up to about 10psi. I haven’t managed to get to
Texaco yet as it’s near the end of term and I have shedloads of work
to do.
I’m hoping to go to a UK unicycle meet in January and I’m wondering
whether the extra weight on my wheel would drastically affect the ease
of tricks, turning etc. I want to get some practice in before I go so
I’m not too rusty. Just I know as a mountain biker that heavy tires
and wheels are bad for turning and braking because of the extra
inertia, what about on unicycles?

I read the thread on wheel walking and am considering giving that
another shot, would the fact my wheel is now effectively a cart wheel
make it particularly hard? If so I would probably change back to my
old Primo/Crappy inner tube combi just so I can refresh my skills and
save the monster tyre for a day when I feel like car-crushing or
something.

Thanks everyone

Simon

Lots of people (myself included) do freestyle-type stuff on a trials uni, so I’d have thought the tyre would have to be very heavy to be heavier than a 20x2.5.

This thing in January you mention wouldn’t happen to be in York, would it?

Simon,

Watch your rim with high pressure. Make sure it can take the pressure…speaking from experience.

A heavy wheel makes some tricks harder to do. If you are trying to spin the uni then the extra momentum makes changing speed and direction harder. It probably wont make a huge difference but it is noticable.

The extreme of this is a multi-wheeled giraffe with two columns of wheels. I rode sem’s 4 wheeler where the wheels are arranged in a square:

Once that thing started turning it just kept on going.

My unicycle is the DM ringmaster advanced, it seems to be a pretty
sturdy BMX 48 spoked rim, does anyone know if this tyre will wreck the
rim, the unicycle was quite pricey and I don’t want to wreck the
wheel, effectively half of the entire unicycle.

I assumed as the BMX tyre was designed for such high pressures, the
rim would be ok too. Am I a dumbass to think so?

Thanks

Simon

Re: Mega Tire

The unicycle meeting thing is in Kidderminster, on the 4th, as far as
I’m aware, is there one in York? This would be a lot easier for me to
get to.

Thanks

Simon

Chocfest 8, on the 25th of January. There was a web page, www.chocfest.york.ac.uk , but it dissappeared recently and now points to the solar system cycle track. Still a good read, though… pictures of Unicyclists!

Re: Re: Mega Tire

Nice unicycle. I got one too.

The DM ringmaster advanced uses a good strong alloy rim. It will handle a high pressure tire without risking damage to the rim.

What you have to watch for are the standard low cost unicycles because they can have wimpy rims that might not handle a high pressure (100 psi +) tire.
