Media Player 11

Anyone using it yet? Any opinions?

microsoft sux

I really like it; the layout and library sorting categories are nicely visualized. The only thing is that it is almost to powerful for our computer so it is slow.

i just downloaded it and then saw this thread. i like it its pretty nice:)

i’m still with media player 9

WMP 11 is weird. The way it displays lists is not very efficient. I do not need pictures, and I need to be able to pick my columns. It’s pretty cool though theres an equalizer and speed controls and other gadgets. Hopefully MS will restore all of the old WMP 10 functionality as far as layout is concerned (this is a beta).

That’s an opinion all right.

We Mac users only get Media Player 9. And still lots of stuff won’t play unless I do my own detective work to figure out what codecs I’m missing and where to find them. A better media player might be able to tell me or offer me a link to something other than a generic page of codecs…

I havent liked windows medai player, its ok, but I use RealPlayer, it plays ever video format I have ever tried, and I have the DivX codec, so it can play those.

Ill try version 11 soon, but ill go back to RealPlayer.

Winamp all the way!

Rock on!

FOOBAR!!!

I have to use WMP 11 for my iRiver :@

I used to use Winamp… but AudioScrobbler has converted me into an iTunes user.

PC’s Rule!

Real player is the worst media player I have ever tried. My WMP plays everything as well, and I don’t have to go snooping for codecs like FOSS.

What is your Last FM username?

version 10 has that too.

MPC and winamp for me.

For me, its realplayer, never had troubles with it, very easy to use, isnt that big of a program so i can multi-task with it playing my music.

I’m pretty sure my computer has WMP 10, and it had all of that stuff…

I have not tried WMP 11. I don’t want to install a beta version of Windows Media Player on my primary computer. If I had an extra XP computer that I could dedicate to being a guinea pig I’d give it a try.

One thing I don’t like about Windows Media Player (and many other media players) is that it can only use the default Windows sound device. I want to dedicate the good sound card to music listening and leave the crummy sound card for system sounds and the like. To use a different sound device with WMP I have to make a global change to the sound settings in the Control Panel. iTunes and Real Player are the same, they both only use the default Windows sound device.

Some media players have an option that lets you select which sound device it uses for playback. I like that. If the media player gives me the choice then I can have my music (or video sound) played over my good sound card while the system sounds continue to go to the crummy sound card. That way no system sounds get played over my music.

So for now I’m stuck with using media players that give me an option to select which sound device is used for playback. That means I prefer media players like Foobar, Quintessential, Winamp, etc.

I believe that Windows Vista will make it possible to make use of two or more sound devices so you can have system sounds go to one sound device and other sounds go to another. I haven’t looked at the Vista beta to see how that is implemented or how convenient or functional it is.

All the way… until version 5.13. Anything thereafter has had it’s Shoutcast support horribly botched. I used to love surfing through 100s of Internet radio stations, looking for new stuff to listen to, but newer versions of Winamp only give you the “top 20” stations… and they’re all crap! Plus, one can no longer sort the stations in any intelligble manner… those Winamp dudes really messed up a great product.

Now I’m searching for Winamp alternatives. I’m sad 'cause I loved the extendability of Winamp… all the various DSPs, visualization packages, codecs, tools, etc. I’m hoping to find something else with a similar user / developer community… :frowning:
