he was merely creating work experience and giving you an income?
Ive always wanted an manual mower.
I had one four years ago when I lived in the suburbs. It was great for my probably around 1/6 of an acre lot. Now I live the forest though, so thankfully there’s no grass to cut.
Any one who wants to try a manual lawn mower is welcome to come to my house and try mowing my lawn.
I wouldn’t mind actually mowing the lawn if we had a newer lawn mower. We got the one we have now from my grandma and it is rusty and noisy and dull.
Since we really only have crab grass in our front yard and the lawn mower is dull I usually end up mowing it and then having to weed-wack it. I think that defeats the whole purpose of having a manual mower.
That isn’t fair. You need a new reel mower. Antique reel mowers are bad. New modern reel mowers are good.
The modern reel mowers are actually easy to push as long as you are mowing a maintained lawn. If you’re trying to mow an overgrown or weed infested lawn then it’s going to be difficult going and you might want to borrow the power mower from the neighbors till you get the lawn under control.
Nice thought, but we have a few acres of grass. It would be great to mow less of it, but until then, we got one of these suckers :
It does 13 mph, zero turn, and we can mow our entire lawn in about an hour and a half (instead of around 3.5 with our old mower).
A new manual lawn mower can handle a good deal of weeds. Last spring when the garden had been unkept for several years we had to turn to a manual weed wacker (scythe) once, but after that the manual mower has had no problems.
With a 9000sq.ft. garden there isn’t much use for a gas powered lawn mower.
Speaking of lawn mowers. Need to bump this for GILD.
I’m here.
What is this bizarre fascination about my relationship with lawn mowers?
I can’t remember ever mentioning the term on this forum.
That said, I grew up with petrol mowers and a rusty old manual reel standing in the back of the garage.
I always fancied it but my dad could be bothered.
He’s not the world’s greatest handyman-type.
I dig The Dad. He brought me up to pay other people to do stuff. It’s an attitude I love more and more, especially as I crack another beer.
When I eventually settled after the ‘lost weekend’ described in the ‘what does your nick mean’ thread, it was as a result of wanting a Rottweiler, for which I had to have a house.
And a yard. Which had to be mowed. I used to rent a lawnmower from the garage on the corner. In rainy season this was every week and it struck me one day that I could buy a lawnmower with the money I spent renting one.
I credit that realisation with the closest I ever got to growing up.
I bought a lawnmower. I phoned The Dad.
“Dad”, I started, “I sold my soul today.”
“Sounds like fun”, he blathered back at me, “what the hell did you do?”
“I bought a lawnmower Dad.”
“You’re f@#%&d now boy.”
I had it for a couple of years and eventually sold it on to a flatmate’s girlfriend who had a house and a yard.
But no Rottweiler.
Somehow the image of GILD in bermuda shorts pushing a lawn mower makes me LOL.
I like the news because it shows that there is hope for the world. Even if the urban dwellers aren’t willing to give up their SUV they are willing to switch to manual lawn mowers. It’s progress and retro. Kind of like wearing bowling shoes and bermuda shorts.
I just checked the link in the first post and it is now dead. Here’s a Google News search that finds other sites with the same AP story.
