Make A Mistake on the Coker Today...Ouch

Well I got my coker a few weeks ago. It’s been great riding it so far. No problems, up to today. I went for a ride with my younger sister, she was on her bike. At one point she pulled a little ahead of me so I sped up and passed her. Well she was on a bike so she sped up and started passing me slowly. I tried to turn the speed up a little more and fell forward.
Well I didn’t hurt myself to bad just a bruised hip, road rashed arm, cut the tip of one finger, and split open my palm. No gear on, I know that wasn’t the smartest idea. I almost was able to run it out and jump to the grass. Almost, I needed to take one more step to dive to the grass 3 just wasn’t enough. I landed on the curb.
My problem is I have a coker with the Pi-bar. I have a tendency to lean hard and the handle to get the uni to lean forward to speed up. I need to try and break this habit because I assume it is not the proper way you want to gain speed. Any tips on maintaining speed over a distance would be appreciated.

Practice high speed cadence

Practice. Learn how to smooth out your high speed cadence on some thing else like rollers or a trainer and then bring it back to the Coker. You can practice high speed cadence on a Coker while on a set of rollers. Put the rollers between two objects so you can hold your self upright while spinning. Riding rollers with a Coker will help you smooth out your pedaling and get rid of wheel wobble. Be careful not to bounce out of the rollers or run off the side.

Yup, practice. Changing the angle of the unicycle frame will not affect your speed. But pushing down on the handle, as you described, could foul up your balance because it also makes the seat move forward, but in a way you may not be ready for. You probably didn’t need me to tell you that part.

I learned early-on in unicycling to manage my own speed. In the first sprint race I ever entered, I fell off because I was trying to catch the guy ahead of me. It doesn’t work that way. Ride within your means, and only push the envelope gently, especially when it’s at speeds like that.

And wear some gloves and a lid, at least!

Looks like you made a mistake on the forums today, too.

If you’re talking unicycling, please post in Rec.Sport.Unicycling.

I agree I feel more confident with a helmet.

i found a good place to practice speed- near hills. uphill, though. gain speed going toawrds the uphill slope, and really pedal hard as you enter the hill. that way, you slow down faster.

Your crash is your second problem. Your first problem is you endangered your sister on her two wheeled contraption as she was passing. Teach her ride a real vehicle! The old hag bringing me an ale from across the room said she once was a b*** rider. Give your sister a better future. Teach her to ride!
