majordomo on the raq

is there anyway to make the majordomo on the raq only allow the siteadmin to
send emails to the list and NOT use it as a discussion list?

I was looking at this HTML version of the raq manual, and it doesn’t seem
so…

Go in and edit the majordomo configuration file for that list which is
located at /usr/local/majordomo/www.domain.com/lists/listname.config

In there there is a lot of documentation so just read through and change
teh settings for however you want it to be. I’m not sure how the RAQ
deals with the config file though, so it might overwrite it if you
change things in the raq control panel.

You may also want to check out the majordomo homepage at
http://www.greatcircle.com/majordomo/ for some documentation.

Re: majordomo on the raq

Any changes that you make the the majordomo config files on the Raq will be
overwritten any time you make a change via the GUI.

Down that path lies madness

I’ve been playing around with Ecartis (formerly known as Listar) and like it
a lot more than Majordomo.

(They are currently in transistion and partially at http://www.listar.org/
and partially at http://www.ecartis.org )

If you want to use anything you use there, you need an additional majordomo
installation set up so that it does not conflict with the Raq’s included
majordomo installation. This requires hiring a majordomo guru to do the
installation for you.

I used to use majordomo a lot, but have switched over to using mailman

Re: majordomo on the raq

Winston,

I have successfully administered my Majordomo lists over the RAQ without
this problem. I edit the files myself by hand and so far so good. I have
found that the only files it will rewrite are files it allows you to edit
via the interface. Since it doesn’t allow you to edit the majordomo config
files via the interface, you don’t have any problem.

Re: majordomo on the raq

so you were able to edit the majordomo config to allow only the list
owner/siteadmin to send mails to the list?

Re: majordomo on the raq

Yes, there is an entry for that. You make it an announcement list.

Re: majordomo on the raq

those docs are not user friendly…if you get a chance, can you post or
email the area of the config file that you need to change to make it an
announcement list only? Or if you know what area of the docs I should be
reading, that would be cool too…

Just find the config file for the list and open it in a text editor. It’s
pretty self-explanatory

I don’t know which majordomo you have, but in mine the config file is
self-explanatory. It pretty much lays out exactly what things should be.
On my system the config files are located in:

/usr/local/majordomo/www.domain.com/lists

listname.config

Open the config file and it should have plenty of comments explaining
everything.

Re: majordomo on the raq

ok, I was probably making it more complicated than I needed to by looking at
the docs on the website instead of the actual file.

thanks,

one question: do I edit as the siteowner or as root, or does it matter?

I don’t think it matters as long as the original perms remain intact.
