Magura

Hi,

When I get a new MUni frame (Wilder, that’s all the info I should give, till its out), I want to run Magura HS-33 brakes. I know, I know, they aren’t that beneficial; for me they will be for the stuff I am going to try!!! Anyway, I only need one, I have never seen them sold that way, usually in pairs.

How can I get hold of just one, as needed, and would I use a front or back set? Where can I get just one?

Thanks,
-Evan

The real question you should be asking is “What rim should I get to use
with the rim brake?”. The Sun Doublewide is not the best rim for use with
a rim brake. I’m not sure what other w-i-d-e rims are out there that would
be better for a rim brake. Most (all?) wide downhill rims are intended to
be used with disk brakes and not rim brakes.

If UnicycleSource sells the Wilder with brake mounts for Maguras, I
would be surprised if they didn’t also sell a Magura along with it
already mounted.

For all you will want to know about Magura check out
http://www.magura.de/english/download/downloads.htm And download the
workshop manual for the rim brakes. Also check out
http://www.execulink.com/~dtierney/wmc/Magura/contents.htm

I don’t think there is any difference between the front and rear Magura
rim brakes other than the length of tubing that comes with them. But the
brake levers for left and right are mirror images of each other.

Also, you don’t want the quick release holder for the brake. It will
just jab you in the leg (ouch). Make sure both holders are the standard
bolt on type.

http://www.dhbike.com has w-i-d-e rims with CNC’d braking surfaces.

If I remember correctly the original post was asking where you can get a
single Magura… That being the case you can get a single HS33 (left or
right) from (you may need to piece the url together again) http://www.cha-
inreactioncycles.com/viewproduct.asp?category=brakes+hydraulic
&ModelID=1614690831 for about ?70 GBP.

Chain Reaction are based in Ireland so probably not a lot of use outside
Europe unless you have lots of patience that is

Currently I use a Magura brake setup on a Sun Doublewide. Although I
agree that this is not an ideal setup, it does work in the absence of
anything better. The main problem is not braking power (which is good),
it’s that the painted rim sidewalls squeek incredibly loudly when the rim
is dry and dusty.

In the UK we can get Halo Combat rims, these are only 36mm wide but they
come in a wide range of drillings, sizes and come with or without machined
braking surfaces.

24"/26"
32/36/48 drilling with or without braking surface

Those Canadian ZUM eliminator rims sound good though.

I bought a pair of HS33 Maguras for 99 pound from Halfords Uk - they price
matched a magazine.

(The other one is on the front of our Tandem !)

Neil was right

Neil,

You were right. What tube length am I going to need for that Wilder MUni coming out? the length for a front brake or the length for the back? Were can I just find a single Tomac or HS-33?

This time I hope I got it right this time,
-Evan

Re tube lengths on the Magura:

Likely neither Front or back tube lengths will fit perfectly. Don’t quote
me on this but think you need about an 18" long tube for the brake. In
addition, the second short hose that connects the two brake pads is a bit
too short for a 3" tire. It does fit but is very close to the tire- a tube
that’s about 1" longer than this stock length is best.

If you can order a length of tubing, some olives (little thingies that
clamp on the tubes to seal them against the nuts that screw into the brake
housing), and the nuts that screw into the brake and brake lever housings,
you could cut them yourself. This would be best; otherwise just order the
front brake and hope for the best.

Cheers,

One other thing about Maguras: It’s a good idea to have some extra brake
fluid on hand so that you can bleed the brakes yourself (very easy job-
not worth going to a shop to do this). Don’t bother getting the special
(and expensive) Magura brake fluid though: just go down to your local
pharmacy and get some light mineral oil. This works fine for Maguras
(although not for other brands of hydraulic brakes).
