m4a to mp3 converter?

I have a bunch of m4a files which are evil and won’t play on anything by windows media player classic or itunes. I want to play then in windows media player and my mp3 player but of course thats impossible at the moment.

Does anyone know of a program that can convert them to mp3?

Preferably a free one, it would feel like I’m being extorted into buying one if I were forced to pay for one.

Are those the ‘protected’ ones you get off the itunes store, or are they just regular m4as?

If they’re regular ones you can just itunes or wmp to convert them.

If they’re the stupid ones off itunes then you can try HYMN, but I never got that to work.

If you have songs you bought from iTunes, a simple (though less-efficient) way to convert them is to save them as .wav files first, then back to whatever compressed format you want. The easy way to do this in a program like iTunes is to turn them into an audio CD. You can probably do this without having to actually burn the disk. Then you just rip them again. Loss of quality? Yes. But I think that’s going to happen with any form of conversion from a compressed format to another one.
