Long term effects of riding unicycles?

Did anyone else see the US television program 20/20 on ABC Thursday, September
18? The topic was impotence directly caused by sitting on “bicycle” seats.
Apparently a very important artery that caries blood to the penis is crushed
between the hip bones and the seat. People who crush this artery repeatedly
(daily use of a bike) can cause hardening of the artery walls. This damage then
restricts blood flow to the penis.

I have often wondered if I have been doing any damage to my body by ridding my
unicycle daily. I have experienced discomfort, I think it is safe to say we all
have. I now use padded riding shorts and put a inner tub in my Sem cycle seat
(a great idea I found on this news group, thanks!), however I can’t say I live
pain free now.

Does anyone have any comments on the topic? We recently had a thread where many
of us shared who we are and what we do. Do we now need to take a survey focusing
on “amount of riding” and “does everything work O.K.”?

Greg Caster, a daily rider for 2 years and everything seems to be
working fine….

I read a couple of extensive articles about this in Bicycling Magazine a while
back. One of their main writers, who competed in Team RAAM last year, admitting
to encountering some problems in this area.

So unfortunately it is true, as we seat-sitters can easily believe.

However, I think the shape of your seat has a lot to do with the type of damage
you are doing. Not to mention the sheer amount of hours you are putting in. My
seats are fairly wide (old style Miyata), and put pressure in to areas that are
more widely spread. I think my wider seat, as opposed to a narrow road bike
seat, is putting less pressure in the critical area.

This does not mean I can’t get sore after a lot of riding!

I always ride with padded shorts, and am interested in trying the air seat idea
also. I have not encountered any problems of a “medical” nature.
