Long distance riding

I am considering a long distance ride to raise money for charity. I have
mastered basic unicycling and would appreciate any advice, information, comments
etc etc that anyone may have.

thanks paul nailand johannesburg

Does ‘za’ stand for South Africa? Cool.

Spare no expense on cycling shorts. They can make all the difference in the
world of comfort. Also, do plenty of test riding to make sure you have your
saddle the way you want it. For long rides, you can add gobs of foam that may
make the cycle less maneuverable, but who needs to maneuver on a tour-type ride?

Try not to carry much weight on your person, such as in a backpack, because all
of that weight will add to what’s bearing down on your saddle. In 1983-84 a guy
named Pierre Bernier rode most of the perimeter of North America (about 10,000
miles) on a special made giraffe. It was a low giraffe, with the pedals just
above the wheel, and a pair of panniers on either side of the wheel. He carried
no extra weight on his person. He also had a spare tire with him.

Ultimately, you will have a person with you on a bike, or motorcycle (a motor
home is even better). They carry everything and handle the boring details and
talk to the press

Please tell us where you plan to ride, and how far?

Sounds great! My boyfriend lives just south of Pretoria in Wapadland? (I think).
I’m here in the states trying to get him some unicycling connections and a
unicycle. Are there many groups or clubs in South Africa? Do you know how he
could buy a cheap uni there?

I am visiting June/July and will be in Johannesburg. I’d love to come see what
you all are up to. If you could help him I can send you his snail mail adress,
or I could pass on any info to him.

Any others in Suid-Afrika reading? Let me know!

Thanks and Happy long distance riding! Gwynneth VanLaven
