list thread digests

In the last few years this list has gone from about 100 posts per month to
over 200 per day. Personally, I think this is great. The more people that
are actively discussing unicycling and riding the better, in my opinion.
Unfortunately, the quantity of mail is huge. The messages are hard enough
to pick through when they’re separate, much less if I was to receive a
daily digest. I find that I usually don’t read entire threads whereas
others may interest me enough to read it in entirety. Is it possible that
the mailing program could sort the posts into threads and send thread
digests with each thread in a separate message? This would be far more
manageable for me, at least, and I’m sure that others would benefit from it
as well.

That’s one reason I use a newsreader to access the forum (newsgroup).
Outlook Express neatly organizes the group into threaded discussions.

I’m puzzled…

Why not just com to the forum? what benefit does a news group in your email have?

Re: list thread digests

This has come up several times before. There are several ways to access the
messages in the rec.sport.unicycling forum.

  1. Usenet news. There are numerous newsreaders with various capabilities.
I use Outlook Express (mostly because it required no effort on my part to
obtain). OE keeps the forum (or newsgroup) neatly organized in threads. I
can also connect to the internet and download all the new messages for
offline reading (although I have DSL and a wireless LAN so why would I?)

  2. HTTP access at www.unicyclist.com. This seems to be the most popular
method of accessing messages posted to the group. Gilby has done a great
job and deserves our support. The main disadvantage to this method (at
least for me) is that the messages aren’t sorted into a tree view. I’ve
also not been able to see any way to tell which messages have been read and
    which remain unread.

  3. Email (either individual or digest). I believe this method came after
the usenet group but before the www.unicyclist.com website. I know very
little about this method so any comments I make would be speculation.
Therefore I will make no further comment about it.

So, the reason I don’t “just com to the forum” is that I prefer to have the
messages organized in a treeview that marks which messages have been read.
I’m unlear what is meant by “a newsgroup in your email”. Since newsgroups
and email are seperate I cannot answer that.

p.s. When my crappy MSN newsserver is not working I find myself VERY
grateful to Gilby for the ability to post via the www.unicyclist.com
website. And yes, I am aware that there are free public NNTP servers out
there but usually that’s because the NNTP server admin forgot to lock it
down. So, usually as soon as I find one that works it gets shut down.

Nope. The email list was in existence well before the newsgroup.
I think it was run by a guy called Terry who had previously
run the jugging email list (before it got a newsgroup).
IIRC, the fact the email list was around and had reasonable
traffic was one of the pieces of supporting evidence used
to justify the vote for the newsgroup. Even then, it failed
on the first attempt.

Yep, I am that old.

You can find more historical info here:

Basically, laziness. I would often forget to read and therefore not have
the opportunity to stay current on interesting stuff if I used a
newsreader. Instead, all of the posts are e-mailed to me by choice. It
eliminates one stop on the info highway. I can check my mail and my favored
newsgroup at the same time. I guess I’m looking for the best of both worlds.

btw, Gilby, I should be able to help you write an extension or modify the
code if you decide that you want to do thread digests. Since it’s my
request I’d be glad to help any way that I can.
