leg getting tired while idling

Is it normal for my leg to get really tired while idling? I can get between 20-30 idles without much problem, but once I hit that range, my leg gets quite sore.

Is it just a matter of building up leg strength? I’m not sure where I’m needlessly using energy, as it seems that the downward leg is the only thing that causes the front to back movements.

Thanks!

it’s less a matter of building leg strength as it is a matter of learning how to idle. once you are comfortable with the process of idling, you start using less energy to rock back and forth.

Idling is nothing whatsoever to do with leg strength. It’s all to do with timing. You shouldn’t fight against the uni. You should catch it at the right moment of the swing and put the pressure on the pedal then.

Look a long way ahead (aids balance) and practise oractise, practise. Youn should be able to get the idling movement down to a small swing - maybe the pedal going from 5 to 7 on the clock face.

With practice, you will be able to idle almost indefinitely, hold conversations, juggle, cook a meal or knit a jumper, alll with minimal effort.

Definately technique. Try to sit down more, sounds sily but I used to find my self almost stood on one foot whilst idling and the uni would be doing almost U turns around my downward foot.

Stay in the saddle and use the momentum of the unicycle. Don’t put all your weight on one foot either.

Technique! Normally idling should take little or no more effort than riding. Just like when riding: try to relax and put your weight on the saddle (not the pedals).
