I want to start to do more trail/trials stuff so I’m trying to learn new skills. I can hop up onto the sidewalk or over a small obstacle while riding, but what is the best way to learn hopping in place, leading to hoping over and onto things? Is the hop up and down or do you move back and forth, like an idle but with hops?

Over the summer I learned to hop and it happened very quickly. I started
by leaning against a wall, standing up off the saddle, linking to the
saddle and hop, hop, hop. Then I added a ride, stop, stand, hop, hop,
hop. At first I was doing a lot of pogo sticking (boing, boing, boing).
This is not ideal for good high hop. You need to develop a still stand,
compress and snap hop. Some very good examples of this can be found
