Happy birthday NSYO!

Happy Birthday NSYO.
Great thread !

happy birthday NSYO

I have a question, i hate my seat… and i thinking about ordering one off of unicycle.com

I need a seat, seat post and i would get a nimbus 25.4 seat clamp (red)

Which KH saddle should i get?

street - narrow
Freeride - more padding
Slim - the thong of unicycle saddles
Do they come with the bolts to mount to the seat post?

I am still learning but i will start basic trials and muni, as well as some small commuting, for the shaving commutes i would rather rocket throughout it at over 50 km/h on my road bike >_<

I am leaning towards the street, i prefer the thinner saddle on my bikes and i am not a very big person so it should give me a little more maneuver room.

Thoughts, opinions? all welcome?

TLJ one year old

NSYO, happy birthday to the TLJ thread! Thanks so much for starting this.

I was a week or two late to the party but was learning right as you and several other oldies were just getting going. One year later, three unis in the stable and much progress in road and Muni riding. And I met MAW through the thread who was a great riding partner until the summer came.

I rode Uni for six months straight until the summer paddling season came and have taken the past six months off. Yesterday I got on the Uni for the first time since Easter and it is like riding a *ike- I can still Uni!

I’m looking forward to year two!

Hey TopHatPlus, I’ve been using the 2011 street saddle. (they come with bolts)
Like you, I choose it over the freeride because I wanted something with similar padding to a bicycle saddle. The street feels like those cushy MTB saddles. The center groove is quite deep. I can’t imagine having twice the amount of padding on the freeride model, lol.

I start to get sore after 1 hour or less, and that is when I take a break. If you’re doing Muni it doesn’t really matter, you will upd or put weight in your pedals so often, there’s no chance to be sore!

ok so the street seams like these logical choice, do i need a new seat post or will my current on fit? Unicycle.com is out of stock on the KH 25.4 mm seat posts, would the nimbus work as a replacement? So many questions… should i start a new topic for this?

I did not buy a new seatpost. Your stock seat post probably has the standard mount, which is what almost every other seatpost has. My 2 year old used made in taiwan crapcycle 24" has it. So did the nimbus. I think there are 3 types of mounts, standard, miyata, and rail mounts.

Rail mounts are what bicycles use. If you buy adapters, you can use bicycle seatposts for unicycle seats.

Standard:

Miyata:

I learned all this from spending too much time reading this forum.

mine has the standard, when i tightened up the 3 of the 4 remaining bolts it have the slots for adjustment, thats awesome saved $25 =D hehe i will re finish my seat post to gloss black so the seat post clamp really pops =D

TopHatPlus, I don’t know if this will help anymore, but i use the street saddle and it’s actually pretty comfy! Also, if you still have the same uni and seat post that you had at first , it will fit the seat. I know, because I have the same uni as you, and the seat fits perfect for me! :stuck_out_tongue:

I am just on a Torker LX 24. It came with a Miyata seat post and saddle designed to torture humans, so I bought a KH saddle and standard post. If I get more serious about trials then I will look into getting a trials 20" but for now this is good enough for the low hopping I do. I think I will get to a point of doing drops up to 24" but wonder if I will ever want to do anything bigger. I think you could learn to hop and have quite a bit of fun on your Quax 24.

I have both Freeride and Street. I have not ridden the street much yet. The Freeride has more padding but I have done long Muni rides and pretty long 26er rides on it and I like it. On my roadie I ride a Brooks B17 so I don’t like squishy road saddles but the Freeride doesn’t seem over-padded to me. The length and width of the Street is identical to the Freeride. The two differences are that it has less padding (or stiffer foam, I’m not sure which), and it has a vinyl cover where the Freeride has a breathable cloth cover.

Interesting. I maybe I will get a freeride on my next uni, so I can compare/swap around.

Hopping!

I was able to work out today for about 45 minutes and mostly did a lot of hopping. My hops up curbs moving to the right with my left hand on the saddle grip have been the thing I have worked on the most until today. I was able to switch hands and then hop up a curb moving to the left. It felt great :). I was also able to do a variety of rolling hops moving forward including going up some low curbs and one or two rolling hops up a curb moving to the right.

Along with the hopping I worked a lot on the rolling mount. Once you get used to it it is a great mount. I still try to set the pedals in a good position most of the time which helps but I think over time I won’t have to worry about the pedals much anymore.

I think I am going to work on hopping and idling for the next while and not do much other riding. I think it will really improve my overall skills and feel so that my other riding (cruising, muni, 36er) will all become more smooth and natural. At least I hope so :sunglasses:

The weather here in the Salt Lake valley is already turning cold and we have snow in the mountains and down almost all the way to the valley! So much for Autumn :frowning:

Been in a slump, been kind of depressed about all the time i haven’t been able to spend with my girlfriend, missed her birthday… and just hating this long distance relationship business… it is TERRIBLE, but i really could see myself marrying her so i am putting all i have into it =D

Was away at the Taylor Coach campout this weekend and took my uni, only got 30-45 minutes in because i then had to go on a group bike ride where i literally blow my back tire up, blew a 2 inch section of tread clean off the tire >_< haha at 115 psi those skinny road slicks go with a BOOM! My uni riding went well it had been about 2 1/2 weeks since i had gotten out due to some crazy illness to the point i couldn’t stand up without a migraine, but i free mounted pretty well and had some decent long rides, turns, and dropped off a 3" edge onto a decently sloped gravel walking path then a 180 and back up =D hehe i should have some time depending on the weather coming up.

Oh bother,
I was hoping you would say something like; ‘Yes, you can buy happiness’ :stuck_out_tongue:

Looks like it will be a 24 muni for my Bday next year…

Thanks for that,

James
(been a bit busy lately)

NSYO, nice progress! Hopping is mad cool. I am not mad cool. (Yet.)

THP, that’s a tough dilemma. Tried it a few times, never worked for me. Hope you’re a better man. Keep riding, because unicycling is the only thing in life that really matters

KR, if money could buy happiness, happiness wouldn’t be worth buying. But money can buy me a nice 29 or 36er, so then I will be happy. When I have the money. :-/

This once a week riding crap has to stop. Did just over 5 miles tonight, and the small hills were getting to me. Oh well, I just gotta find more time to ride. And I need a new tire. The bald spots have become a bald spot. Maybe I’ll get a bigger seat post while I’m at it…

Hello AnimalCage!

Been wondering where you were. (Glad to see you!) You MUST be busy! Riding once a week is not AnimalCage. I’m not riding as often either, which is not getting me to that two mile mark as soon as I would like. Stuff keeps getting in the way (excuses, excuses). I won’t bore you all with the details.

One of these days I’m going to make a video so you guys can see I really have been working and making progress.
Freemounting seems to need daily reinforcement though, or it gets difficult again.

Hey, NYSO. I think it was you that did the “up and overs” on the crosswalk by your house. (Or was it AC? I think it was NYSO that posted the picture and did a ton of practicing on the thing right close to home.) After doing the incline at the college, I thought I would up the challenge a bit and try the only “hill” I could think of anywhere near where I live… the crosswalk over the interstate. It is old and not very well kept. Bumpy, rusty, etc. I took the uni and had a look. Uhhhh… That’s just about all that happened. If I had been able to hold on to the railing to get some momentum going, I might have been able to do it, or at least part of it. The spikes on top of the chain link fence would not let me move my gloved hand along the top rail. I just couldn’t “take off.” I’m going to try it again, but I’m not sure when.

Meanwhile, inspired by mbalmer, I’m trying to walk inclines to gain some strength, so I’m walking the “up and overs” back and forth. Maybe if I walk some heavy-duty inclines I will have more power to try it with the uni. I have a treadmill that inclines, but that is so boring compared to walking outside (or unicycling of course)! I have to drive to get to the crosswalk, and the surrounding neighborhood near is not all that conducive to leaving my car parked and walking in a caged area by myself, but so far it seems to be okay.

I’m still looking for an “in between” incline… something more than the ramp at the college, but not quite the “mountain” that crosses the interstate just yet. Hey, it’s FLAT in southwest Louisiana!

Speaking of the ramp at the college, once I tried that one, I was actually surprised at how easy it was to ride up and down. I think it must be easier to ride up an incline on a unicycle than it would be on a simple ungeared bicycle. (Do you think so?). Leaning into the incline can’t be done on a bicycle like it can be on the uni. Does that sound right?

Happy Riding Everyone!

Hello to you, too!! I feel a bit more control riding on a slight incline. I still can’t really let go and enjoy the downhills, I’m always slowing it down, afraid of losing it. I like being able to lean into the hill and power up. Just need to ride more! I always tell people, you do what you can with what you got. If you don’t have hills, practice other stuff. Can’t do any more than that! Take care.

57UniRider, is your seat high enough? I find that it is the same on a bike or a uni. (But no easy gear on uni :() As I cycled on my mtb, my seat got higher and higher. When I started, my uni seat was comfortably high, but now it’s getting to the same height as on my mountain bike. You want your knee about 15-25 degrees away from totally straight.

I finally got to ride 2 days ago. Only a short, 30mins ride to test my ankle and new tire. The long break definitely helped reduce the soreness.
Today I rode the 20" for half an hour at an average of 5km/h. Which is really slow, almost walking speed. I had to go as slow as I could, so my mother could walk with me.

Hi LoneReaction!
Good to hear you are back to riding again. Has it been a whole month already?
Time goes by so quickly sometimes.

I’m pretty sure my seat is as high as it should go. In fact, as I was riding today I thought, gee I think the seat might be TOO high, because I’m almost having to stretch my leg when it is extended to all the way to 6:00. I was even considering taking it down a fraction.

Hey, GOOD NEWS everyone!!!
My friend FINALLY ordered her unicycle!

It is supposed to arrive Tuesday, and we are planning to go riding that very evening. Actually, we are going riding if she has time to get home, get the uni, meet me with it unassembled and let me help her put it together before it gets dark on us. I’m planning to get there early to put in some good practice time just in case her uni doesn’t go together very quickly.

YAY!
I am SOOOO happy she finally ordered that uni!
I was beginning to think she was changing her mind.
Now, I hope we can work out a regular practice schedule at least once a week. She lives across the river from where I am.

Happy Riding Everyone!

Freemounting the beast

Yesterday night I went on a short test ride after fixing up the KH36. It took me many attempts to get on it, even while holding onto something.

Today, I went for a longer ride of 6.5km. Freemounting the thing is really hard! I only had to freemount a few times. Instead of improving, each time got harder, because my legs were turning into jelly.

I got a handle bar for it as well, but I have no idea when is the right time to put it on. Probably when I’m better at freemounting and riding it.
