Does anyone use the Fox knee/shin guards and are they worth a damn?
From what I can tell there are 3 options for knee/shin guards: Kris Holm, Fox, 661. I won’t like the 661’s because I don’t want to take off my shoes everytime I want to remove the shin guards (there’s no straps).
I like the Kris Holm pads. Only worn them twice, but they stay in place better than the 661’s that I was using. You’re right about the 661’s being a pain because you have to remove your shoes to take them off. I hated that. Another thing I really like about the Percussion pads is the fact that they protect the back of your legs. That’s already saved me some blood on my first time wearing them.
I gave up on the combined knee+shin pads; they just always slide down.
It’s as if a ratcheting action wants to pull them ever downward with every pedal stroke, with the lower part pulling the top part down, but never pushing it back up. Maybe because soft cloth is better at pulling than pushing, or just because the leg gets skinnier farther down.
So I switched to separate knee and shin guards, and now I can go the whole ride without touching them again. It’s nice. My knee pads make me take my shoes off, the shin pads don’t. The shin pads also protect the back of my calves nicely. The shin guards are Triple-8’s (here on amazon), the knee pads are THE brand, I think, no link handy. I don’t think the exact models matter so much as just getting away from the all-in-one concept.
I like the 661 4x4s for knee/shin ,but not so much on the 4x2 elbows . The 4x4s wrap around your calf and knee without removing anything. You can still find them on ebay or amazon. I have an extra pair you can borrow to try out if you like. If someone can explain to me how to post pictures from my phone, I will share a pic of what I mean?

Mr I, I’m wondering if you didn’t get a size too small? What brand were they?
That would be very annoying. I have Super 8 wrist guards (a MUST HAVE!!!), love them, and won’t ride 10ft without them on b/c when you fall it’s always the wrist that takes the brunt force. https://www.amazon.com/Triple-Saver-Wristsavers-Black-Medium/dp/B0000DZIJ6/
broncojon, I think you need to click the “attachment” icon (paper clip) to post pics. Thx for the offer

I just noticed that the “safety gear” photo on the unicycle.com US home page shows a set of knee+shin guards that have slipped way down, leaving the knee completely bare…
Yeah, I tried shortening the straps on one of my sets, the 661s I think. The lowest strap on those was so loose I could wrap it around my ankle twice! But it didn’t help. I also tried moving the below-the-knee strap up a little, so that it was above the widest part of my calf, thinking that it wouldn’t want to slide down onto a wider part of my leg, but no help.
It might depend on the details of how the design matches your leg shape, so all-in-ones might work for others, but I never got them to stay put.
I ended up getting the Kris Holm percussion knee shin guards. I did an 11 mile muni ride today and didn’t even notice them being on, not one glitch and they didn’t slip down at all. Very comfortable and they gave me added confidence since I’ve had some pretty nasty pedal bites on my shins within the past 6 months.
I’m close to buying KH Percussions. I like them because you don’t have to take off your shoes to get them on and off and I like them because they offer protection of the calves.
However, I’m on the fence about the size.
I’m 5’11" and 158 lbs. I’d say my calves are average in size. The distance from the top of my ankle to the middle of my knee cap is 16". I also wear Five Ten Impact High shoes.
From what I’ve been reading, it sounds like my size is “Large”.
Any thoughts? Your input is greatly appreciated.
Be well and keep your skin intact.
I’m 5’11" and about 150 lbs and I went with the large. They work great. I was afraid the x-large would fit too loose. At the same time I thought the large might slip below the knees. No problem. they look a bit short but every time I’ve needed them they were right where they needed to be. They are a bit loose at the ankle but it hasn’t been a problem. X-large might be loose top to bottom.
I hope this helps, good luck.
Update…
I went with the KH knee/shin guards from UDC and LOVE them. No slipping and I don’t even notice them when riding and I typically ride for 1-1.5 hours each time (6-10 miles). I put them over cycling pants and still no slipping.
I have nothing but praise for the KH knee and shin guards, but one has to make sure the size is relevant to the user perfectly, otherwise they will fall down. I have no experience of any other make but the KH, and I for one will not do without them now. Virtually 100% leg cover below the knee right to the top of the foot, excellent value…
Since I have short, stocky legs with large calves, I decided to go with separate shin and knee pads, and it works perfectly. I can also use one or the other, or both together. It didn’t look like the KH knee and shin guards would work for me as one piece, so I use Fuse shin guards (had to get the XLs, and they barely went around my calves), and I just use regular knee pads. The knee pads cover the tops of the Fuse shin guards but don’t interfere with movement, so I have a pretty good amount of coverage on the front. This does not, however, offer much protection for the backs of my legs, but that’s never been an issue for me.
I’m a little envious that you were able to get the KHs to fit perfectly, but I did spend less overall with my setup, so I guess that was a decent compromise!
