Kids on Unis

I’m still trying to learn to ride my uni with the skill and grace I’ve seen
demonstrated by others <G>. I’d also like my kids (ages 6 & 8) to be able to do
the same and have been thinking of getting a smaller uni to just leave in the
garage and let them just get on it and go when they feel like it (as any
attempt in my pushing them in to learning to ride would be met with a big NO!
I’m sure).

Has anyone out there tried this method of exposing kids to learning to ride?
What would be a good size? Am I simply nuts? Any suggestions?

Thanx,

Pete

I had two kids who learned at the ages of 6 and 8 (as well as 3 others who
learned at the ages of 14, 14, and 10). They wanted to learn because I was
riding myself and they wanted to do it too. And as soon as their siblings
learned, then that made them want to learn even more. So they begged for a
unicycle and learned in a pretty short time. So if you ride and obviously enjoy
it, I think that their wanting to ride will be almost a foregone conclusion.

I actually had two kids who didn’t want to learn right away. My oldest boy held
out for about a year - he was content to do other things (such as play
basketball) instead. He finally got bored one day and tried it. Pretty soon he
had learned. After going to the National Unicycle Convention in Monrovia,
California this summer, he is now the most interested one (and he is better than
me!). The other would try it once in awhile. I never pushed it; just made it
available and occasionally would offer to help them if they wanted. Kids are a
pretty curious bunch and don’t like to miss out on fun - and unicycling is
definitely fun!

What would be a good size?

16" wheel is probably the best for that age.
