KH vs. Profile Hub

I am considering purchasing a KH 24” Muni but I am wondering if the extra money is worth it to get a Muni with Profile hub. I weigh 150 lb and want to do 3-4 foot drops and extensive hopping; would an 8-spline KH hub hold up ok without twisting or do I need something stronger? Thanks…

Profile is guaranteed for life, YOUR LIFE! not the expected life of the product. i have a KH and i like it just fine, but if i do happen to dammage it there is no warranty replacement. iether you pay for it now or later when it breaks and you upgrade.

I have a KH hub and its holding up pretty damn well for what I’m doing which isa basically what you listed, but I’m 130/ I think the KH would be fine>

edit: 130 pounds, sorry

i have a 24" profile MUni and a KH trials. ive had my KH for more than a year now and it is a great unicycle. the KH hub takes it hard and keeps it rollin smooth. i weight 155 lbs. (5’10") and do 4-5 foot drops on it. damn if it isnt the best bang for my buck. i ride this the most, and it takes little wear and/or tear. profiles are guaranteed for life, and if you got te money it cant hurt, but i think its overkill in your case. KH.

The KH holds up great for small(ish) stuff, like what you listed. Profiles are best if you want to go where no man has gone before, except for Dan Heaton and Ryan Atkins and Kris Holm and those guys.

Thanks for all your help. Does anyone know whether the kh cranks still have the ankle biting nibs? What kind of cranks go on a profile hub?

Re: KH vs. Profile Hub

In my opinion, it is not as issue of “will it hold up?” If you can afford profiles, get them. They are better, I think most people will agree on that. I think you should just buy the best unicycle within your means. Profiles are stronger and have the guarantee while KH’s are weaker(although they are plenty strong) and can become an additional expense down the road. So, IMHO, if you can afford profiles, get them. If not, KH’s will work.

Edit: I see you have replied…sorry if I instilled some doubt in your mind if you have already made a decision. The newer generation of KH cranks have a much less pronounced ankle biter. I’d say it is proud about 3/8’’ of the crank. Maybe 1/2’'. I can’t see it being a problem…although I never had a problem with the old ones.

Another thing is the profiles are longer (5mm) which some people like. Also they have a q-factor and no nub. Aditionally there have been issues with KH’s not fitting together well.

Yeah, I reckon go with the KH’s for what you said you’re doing. I’ve bent several KH cranks but only from 6’ drops and up (mind you, I’m not going much higher than 6’).

I think I may have also twisted the KH hub a tiny bit but that’s not going to be a problem.

I reckon go with the KH.

I’ve got Profiles on my trials uni and KH’s on my MUni and I think that’s the ideal set up for both.

The biggest crank arms for the Profile are (I believe) 150 or 155, which is fine for trials. The bigger (175s) on the KH are nice to have for MUniiing once the angle steepens up – good to have a higher “gear ratio” for climbing, and good to have your feet a little further apart on the weird-angled drops found on technical MUniing.

But that’s just my preference. One of my riding partners in Santa Barbara runs Profiles and he can make most everything I can so who knows.

I also weigh 210 lbs., and while I rarely drop more than 4 feet on my KH 24, my hubs are mint after 7 months of continuous MUniing.

There is a huge range of crank arm lengths available for the Profile hub, from 145 to 190mm, if I remember correctly. I think there are 10 unique lengths.

You remember correctly.

I prefer profile over KH. My friend just bought a KH20 with a KH hub/crank set 2 months ago. He is already having trouble with it. There is a certain percentage of defective hubs i am told.

What is the normal drop hight a kh hub can handle for a 150Lb rider?

How much higher drops are profile hubs made for?

One thing that I noticed about the KH cranks is that they seem to bend “uniquely” and if you go from riding profiles to KH, you can feel it.

The KH seem to have a tendency to slope towards the wheel, and/or twist in such a way that it varies from KH unicycle to KH unicycle.

I used to have the same “problem” with cheaper cranksets on bikes. The only cranksets I have used and NOT had a problem with were the Shimano Hollotec LX and Profile.

I am 6’5" and 222-260 (with gear and sweat) - however the bending I am talking about was caused by much smaller people.

P.S. I have a problem keeping the profile crank screw tight. It loosens and falls out on the trail. I have been loctiting like there is no tomorrow. Except for that, the Profiles have been flawless for me.
