Yes, there has been progress. Fabrication of some of the internal components has already started, for the first production run. I don’t have a price yet but hope to have that quite soon. I’ve stopped providing an availability date because I think I’ve been wrong at least 3 times now!
I got my road bike used for like $250 or something around that. New I think it is in the $600 range. Giant OCR 3. I can’t even imagine what differences the extra $2,000+ would make, but it can’t be worth it.
At least with the geared unicycle there is a huge functionality difference that one could justify for spending a lot of money on. I do hope that it isnt as high as 2400 though…
A friend of mine who is a serious cyclist has a tricked out $3,500 one year old Bianchi cyclocross bike. She just got a $4,000 road specific Bianchi and she said its top speed is about 5 mph higher than her cyclocross, set up for fast road riding.
I have not. I think that what I meant to say is that for me it doesn’t seem worth it. It all depends on what you are using the bike for. If your main sport is bike racing then yeah it will make sense to have something that expensive to get the edge. For me though, I use my bike for commuting purposes and a small difference in speed or efficiency will not spark my interest that much. What I was saying was that something like the Schlumpf I could see myself justifying as a purchase. Not to increase my speed, but because it adds a whole new functionality to unicycling.
I didn’t mean to offend anyone with a top end bike.
And I understand what you mean by it not being worth it for you. I agree that I couldn’t use a bike that to it’s full potential, and I certainly can’t afford one.
So now that these things are out, I’d just like to review a bit. I have a KH29XC 2005 model cycle to convert to a guni. I’ve never built a wheel or dissected a hub, and I’m not the most mechanically inclined guy. If I got this new hub, I’d have my LBS build up the uni around it.
Q1: So that applies to me, right? I need to grind away the bearing housing lips down to 2mm to fit the new KH-Schlumpf hub? Does that mean the lips on the inside, or outside, or both, of each (L and R) bearing holder?
Q2: Also, the existing spokes would be too long, right?
Q3: But I could re-use the rim?
Q4: And then it would work just fine, ISIS cranks and all?
Q5: Also, just for comparison’s sake, what would I need to do to make a regular (non-splined) Schlumpf hub work with the 2005 KH29 frame?
Thanks in advance for assistance by those more knowledgeable.
Good to know. Do you know if these spokes are relatively common? Is my LBS likely to have them, or should I try to acquire them before asking someone to build the wheel?
On another note, does anyone else wish there were dual drilled KH moments in the 137/110 size? I may be wrong since I have little experience on a geared hub, but it seems to me they would be more versatile than 150/125 cranks. I’ve been riding 150s on my KH29 offroad quite a bit, and I think the inherent weakness of the large wheel diameter is much more limiting than having a shorter set of cranks would be. And the 110s would seem to be better on the road.
Oh yeah they are definitely common. I called up several bike shops and they all had them. I would check with your LBS just to be sure though.
The KH moments look like you could maybe drill an additional hole if you wanted, they look pretty flat and sturdy. I think that on the geared uni the 125/150 will be the way to go for sure though.
This is no longer the case with the new third generation hubs. They use the same kind of knurled bering design that the KH-Schlumph uses but in 40mm. I will probably end up getting one closer to spring and put it in a 26 for a while before moving it to my 36.
