Rumour has it that KH is working on a stronger rim for his 19". Does this mean 48 spokes or something different? I am fast out growing my cheap uni and was looking at upgrading this year but weighing just under 90kgs i am unsure about whether to go with a KH or a Qu-Ax. Can anyone give me a comparison between the strength of the two? Having come from many years of freestyle/trials (dare i say it) bicycle, i cannot ignore spoke count. All comments will be appreciated. Cheers!
Whilst by my own admission I have experience of netiher, it seems to be the genreal view on this forum that the undrilled, 48 spoke will out-do the drilled 36 spoke.
Were you planning to upgrade to a new uni or just switch the rim?
Complete uni. Only have a cheap-and-cheerful chinese uni with upgraded KH seat and Dice pedals at the moment. Have to tighten my cranks every 5 minutes and am practically waiting for them to snap! The plan was to buy a KH but just want to know that it will hold up to my weight. Have you heard anything about KH changing his rim design?
i recon the KH will hold up to your weight easily, theres a thread [THREAD=64384]here [/THREAD]that could help decide whether to have a 36 or 48 spoked wheel
I would say the new undrilled whatchamacallit will be far stronger. Kris knows what hes doing lol. The whole battle of KH and Quax, they’re the same strength about. I personally use quax, for a variety of reasons. (a custom trials uni, using nimbus frame, kh saddle, nimbus rim, maxxis tire, and quax hub/cranks), The Quax hub and cranks are incrediably strong imo. Somewhere i think i heard that Joe Hodges hadnt broken square tubing quax cranks, and the hub that comes with it. KH and Quax wheelsets are probably the strongest out there. The hub/cranks are fool proof strong. Best bet is you’ll never bend both of them. I guess it comes down to how much money you wanna spend, and if you like the color yellow, or the color blue. lol. Good luck on your purchase!
So far the Qu-Ax rim, in a year has not needed to be trued, or the spokes needing to be tensioned. This isnt just in the rim I ride either, but quite a few member here that ride QU-Ax have never had to do much to their rims.
On the other hand, my KH drilled rim needs to be tensioned every week, and easily gets knocked out of true.
Im going to wait until I hear more about the upgrade, and its funny, cause I e-mailed Kris last night asking about the rim rumors. If he isnt getting new rims out, im just going to get a Koxx street rim and see how that holds up, or just switch back to a 48 spoke setup. People say 48 is overkill, but how is that a bad thing when I dont have to worry about my rim as much and have a lesser chance of something bad happening? lol
I agree with you totally,
although im not a heavy rider 145-150 pounds, i can even still knock my rim out of true, but then again, it may be just because its a allex DX 32 rim. still 48 is better
My rim is soo bent right now i cant even ride…i tried a 6 stair…and landed side ways…messing it up.
ive been able to ride now for about a week, and now my rim is jacked…gonna re lace it…
I think if i haven’t heard anything about a new KH rim in the next month or so then then i will build myself a hybrid. From what some of you are saying the Qu-ax 48 sounds like the strength i need (not that i can drop from very high - yet) but it will be hard not to go with a blue frame! I don’t suppose there is any problems when combining KH and Qu-ax unis together? Also, has anyone got any feedback on ceramic bearings? I saw them on ebay the other day and was wondering what the pros/cons were.
