My new uni came with KH / Onza hub and crankset. I haven’t found much product information regarding these items. Since I’m new to unicycling, I was wondering if some of you experienced riders could provide a little feedback regarding initial build quality, toughness, longevity, and whatever else comes to mind pertaining to KH / Onza hub and cranks. Did I get good equipment? How does it compare to other setups? What are your thoughts?
The KH/Onza setup is a fine crankset; mine is still solid after 4+ years of MUni abuse. You will be somewhat limited on crank choices, as no one is making those cranks anymore.
The one thing that’s a little flaky about them is the self-extracting bolts; it’s easy for the extracting ring to work its way out, and occasionally the bolt will jam against the ring as it’s extracting; I had to drill out the ring once. You may be better off extracting the cranks with a bearing puller.
But generally, a very good setup, formerly the reference high-end crankset.
Thank you, tholub. Very good to hear that. I’m not a very heavy rider so it should last me a while. Probably no danger of me bending a crank arm or damaging the axle.
i have a 05 kh trials with that hub/ crankset. After a year of riding on it the cranks just got more and more bent and now it is pretty much so beat up i don’t ride it. I was treating it pretty harshly- big gaps and stair sets but i was hoping it would survive those. I havn’t replaced the cranks because they are pretty pricey and i think they would just do the same. Maybe one day i will swap it over to a new ISIS hub. I’m sure if you don’t punish it so much and have good technique then it will last but my experience with it was disappointing.

I have the 2005 KH/Onza hub and crankset on my original Onza 24 MUni and my KH 29. They are the first “widely used” modern splined cranks for unicycles. They are great and you should get a lot of trouble free use from them. Functionally they do not fall from the Moments. It is just that they are not ISIS. I have put both of mine through hell and they are still like new!
I think they all came with the Onza hub setup. I’m not very hardcore, so it still looks pretty new. ISIS would be better, with cheaper, better crank selection.
The cranks rust where Kris Holm was etched into the paint, they are cro mo steel. Be sure to tighten the cranks bolts down pretty good. It is a straight spline hub and if the bolts get even a little loose you will feel play.
I will assume you have a KH. In that case, the frame is about the same as the new ones. I think they beefed up the neck a bit, but the material and general design of the 05 series is the same as the new ones. I think the new seats are stiffer.
If you search old “Danger uni” (Kris Holm’s forum name) posts, he does a very complete list of the changes made for each year.
