KH Hub

I was wondering what all you KH owners think about the KH hubs. I am interested in buying a heavy-duty uni, I haven’t decided if it will be a 20 inch trials or a 24 inch MUni. If I get the trials I want it to last, but I don’t want to dish out the money for a profile setup. If I get the MUni it might be the KH24, but more likely the YUni with Suzue.

What are your thoughts?
Daniel

I’ve been riding a Yuni 24x3 with the suzue for a couple months and have nothing but praise for it. I opted to go with the Gazz for a little more money. So far, it has been bulletproof!!! I just installed a Magura brake setup on it tonight and was checking the spokes and wheel for trueness and everything is still spot on!
I know right now in the unicycle world, a lot of people swear by splined cranksets but I’ve been thrashing on square taper cranks on mountain bikes for over 10 years and they seem like they will work fine for me on my Muni. In my opinion, the Yuni 24x3 is hard to beat for the price!!!

I have the Yuni (Nimbus II) with Suzue. It has held up fine under my
moderately light MUni use. I bought it August 2002. Had the KH24 been
available at that time I would seriously have considered it, for being
more future-proof. But I don’t like the bit sticking out at the hub…

What “bit sticking out” do you mean? Do you mean that the hub is
fat in the middle?

Why is the KH hub fat in the middle anyway? It’s not solid is it?
What’s in there?

I’ve decided to take the plunge on the KH hub myself. I’d like to
have more choice of crank lengths but I’ve decided I can get used
to 170mm alright. I really wanted 155mm or so, but the difference
is no biggie.

I beleive the “sticking out part” is where the axle passes trough the crank, and extends a half in past the outside edge of the cranks. This is one of the reasons why I decided to go profile instead, becuase I hit my ankle guards on the profile’s axle as it is, and the KH is wider yet.

I don’t have a KH myself but from what pix I’ve seen the axle extends
significantly beyond the outside plane of the rotating crank. It’s
trying to hit the rider’s ankles.

Mosquito repellents don’t repel. They hide you. The spray blocks the mosquito’s sensors so they don’t know you’re there.

Really? Yuck. How bad is it? Anyone know how far in mm we’re
talking? Anyone have pictures? Can you reposition the cranks
closer to the ends of the hub to fix this? How about grinding the
extra off?

KH

I’ve got a KH, and I hardly ever hit my ankle on the crank.
My friend hits his ankle all the time. As long as you have your foot on the inner edge of the pedal rather than up against the crank, you should be fine.

as for moving them farther out, you cant, the part sticking out is part of the crank also. you may be able to grind it down, but you would need a spacer or something

I don’t know how many mm we’re talking but it’s a problem to some. ISTR that Jason posted some pictures of his KH24 in the gallery but I can’t find them. Maybe there’s a good pic on unicycle.com?

Re: Re: KH Hub

I’ve attached a picture of the KH cranks showing the stiky-outy bit.

Everyone I’ve talked to who has a KH unicycle with the KH hub has said that they get used to the sticky-outy bit and that they are not hitting their ankle on it. It may be a problem when you first get the hub, but once you get used to it you seem to learn to keep your ankle away. I have only done a very short test ride on a KH hub so I can’t really comment on my experiences with the hub. If cost is a factor any you don’t want to spring for the Profile hub then the KH is the best option for a splined hub. I’d get one if I was concerned about cost.

I soon got used to the sticky outie bits on my kh24, but they still form annoyance if my feet slip from their posistion and my ankles hit the bit…or sometimes when i mount my foot doesnt land perfectly on the pedal and my ankle hits it. This has caused some nasty UPD’s on steep hills etc.

But its not a reason to not buy a KH - more of an annoyance that goes away than anything, really.

I have the KH 20 trials. Grinding that little extra bit of crank down is a bad idea and is realy not necessary. Hitting your ankles is all in your riding style. At first I was riding it and everything was fine, and I was saying to myself, why are people complaining about bloody ankles? Then I tried to figure out why. I tried bending my knees in a little bit while riding, and whack, OUCH!
I haven’t had trouble at all with it, its an awesome ride and is built strong! I started out clearing 4 stairs, then 5, and right now my record is 6 stairs. I’ve gone off many, many 3 - 4 foot drops and ledges with concrete landings. Its an awesome uni, and I’m not worrying about anything breaking anytime soon.

I think it is important to state your weight, and what type of use your uni gets for reviewing hubs and the like, as a bulletproof hub might be bulletproof to you, but how about someone heavier doing the same things?

I weigh around 145lbs

Here’s some photo’s of the KH20,
Nothing big right now, just some early photo’s when I first recieved it.

I’ve never had problem with the sticky out bits on the KH hub. It’s pretty heavy but I guess that is a good thing if you’re after a strong hub. It’s probably slight overkill for me- I don’t do big drops and I’m about 59kg.

There are other cranks which will fit on the same splines as the KH hub. Although this is not recommended (may void any guarantees?) I think there are cranks that fit just as flush with the KH hub as the KH cranks (eg DMR’s).

Is it just me or does the KH hub have forty two mm outer diameter bearings, making it only fit on a KH frame? There axl is also twenty mm and I am not aware of a twenty inner/forty outer bearing.

Re: Three Day Summit Sale

Wow! I didn’t know they were having a sale. Anyway, I don’t think the little nub at the end of the hub will affect me much, I hope.

On unicycle.com, I saw only 140 and 170’s available for the KH hub. I was wondering what other size cranks (if any) I could get for the KH hub, how much they cost, and where to get them.

Thanks,
Daniel
