KH Fusion Freeride problem

Hey all,

I bought a KH freeride seat a while ago on recommendation from you guys, and I’ve been having some problems. One of the four nuts attaching it to the seat post are constantly coming loose. It’s never the same one twice, but it’s only ever one. The nut itself is tight when there’s no weight on the seat, but as soon as I push down on it or sit on it I can spin the nut completely.

Anything I can do to stop this? It’s fairly annoying having to retighten the nut every day or have to worry about losing them. I use the nuts with the locking washers (or whatever they’re called. It’s late :p)

Thanks in advance,

Val

Loose the split washers, they are preventing you from tightening your nuts properly.

Tighten the nuts on the seat like you are putting a wheel back on a car, tighten the nuts, then tighten them again, than tighten them again. Tightening some nuts can take pressure off other bolts when they are tightened allowing you to tighten the other nuts more.

Excellent, thanks. I remember reading somewhere that you shouldn’t overtighten certain KH seats due to them stripping. Is this true for this seat as well?

I don’t really see how you could strip a KH seat. The bolts that connect to the seatpost go through the steel stiffener plate with square holes to keep the carriage bolts from turning.

It is probably more important to have all the bolts have equal tension than having the nuts cranked down supper tight.

I’ve broken the bolts off by overtightening.

I recommend a dab of loctite.

You can strip the square part of the bolt so that the bolt wont be anchored to the seat anymore. This is a real pain because it is hard then to get the stripped bolt off.

That’s a bad idea. I did that once, and it ended up snapping the bolt clean in half. Twice in a row!

That was a while ago, more recently (just the other day in fact) I had a problem with my KH Freeride where the threads on one bolt were slightly stripped out, so I figured I would just take the seat apart and replace the bolt.

However, the rear bolt holding the bumper on was also stripped, in a different way. The hex shape in the plastic seat base was stripped out (bolt was fine) so that when I turned the nut it just spun forever, and couldn’t get the bumper off, and therefore couldn’t get the cover off.

In the end I ended up being forced to actually cut the bumper off, just to get the seat apart to replace the first bolt! All this on a relatively new KH seat that I won at Moab last year but have hardly used.

Long story short I guess, there are plenty of ways to strip a KH seat. Just snug all the nuts down then go another turn or so past that. As already mentioned, when you tighten one down a lot it loosens up the others, so go back and check them all…
