I was rotating my cranks this morning before a ride this afternoon and my crank wrench slipped off the axle bolt and chewed up the bolt a little bit (the wrench was flawed). I aborted rotating my cranks today, so when I take the chewed up bolt off, I can have an immediate replacement. I was on UDC and didn’t see a replacement bolt for the KH/Onza hub. I have an '05 Freeride.
I searched this topic, but was unable to find much on it. Will a bolt from the hardware store work? Is there another place I can get one? Would my local bike shop have a part like this? When I looked on UDC, I saw Profile specific bolts, and unicycle.com specific bolts. Is there such thing as a KH specific bolt? or is it more generic. Thanks in advance.
Are you sure it needs replacing? I’ve slipped with a spanner occasionally when tightening things and caused slight damage to bolts, but it’s generally only on a bit (ie the top edge of the corners) and it’s generally fine once the spanner is back on properly. It’s worth getting new ones if it happens a few times before the old bolt is rounded off so badly it won’t come off, but once shouldn’t hurt.
'course, I will now be told that’s terrible advice and laughed off the forums. Ah well.
Thanks for the reply. The bolt is at the point where if I can get it off alright, I wouldn’t want to put it back on. The wrench I was using wasn’t really ‘cut’ right, so when it slipped, it rounded part of the bolt enough to make me nervous about it. It’s damaged, and I’d like to have a new one for when the time comes to replace it.
The bolt is very specific, although the Onza bolt form the 04 hub will do the job aswell.
