there’s been a bunch of threads about music recently
i don’t quite know the context in which this comment was made, i think it’s one music fans will appreciate tho
The whole problem can be stated quite simply by asking, ‘Is there a meaning to music?’ My answer would be, ‘Yes.’ And ‘Can you state in so many words what the meaning is?’ My answer to that would be, ‘No.’
– Aaron Copland
Not so profoundly, I’ve always felt that music is something one feels in the gut. Whether it’s a particular pieces’ beauty or power, you just respond to it. There’s lots of visual art that I like, but only a few works that have the same affect on me that music does.
I’m happy to disagree with people about particular pieces of music, songs, or entire periods and/or styles. It’s the people who are indifferent to music, though, that give me the willies.
GILD do you have a reference for that quote? A musician’s magazine that I subscribe to, runs a regular feature about thoughtful music quotes and I consider to submit it, but they require a reference.
klaas, i received it in a daily email from http://www.quotationspage.com/qotd.html
if u want to mail me on unigild(at)gmail(dot)com, i can forward the entire mail to u
alternatively, copy the quote as it appears above and paste that into a Google window, it brings up a bunch of links
Yes, it does. Google seems to have dropped the maximum length of 10 words for queries without telling me. Before asking you, I pasted a string of about 10 words from the quote into Google (trying to include a few ‘rarer’ words) but it didn’t find the Copland quote. Indeed, pasting the whole quote clearly did the trick. Thanks!
