Keeping Uni In Car?

I’ve been keeping my unicycle in the trunk of my car, so I can have it handy
when I have a few free minutes to ride. But lately I’ve been wondering if the
heat will harm it. It’s made some unusual squeeks & stuff from time to time and
I’m wondering if keeping it there is ok.

I usually don’t keep my unicycle in the trunk, because if someone steals my car,
then I would lose my unicycle! Since I am more concerned with losing my unicycle
than my car, that must make me a “unicycle freak.”

On the other hand: if someone wants to steal your uni he/she has first to break
into your car.

I’ve been keeping my uni in the trunk of my dark-colored car for the last few
years, and it’s in great shape. I live in the SF Bay Area, where ambient
temperatures only get up to 90F (32C) occasionally, so if you’re out in the
desert somewhere your trunk may get hotter than mine. But you’d probably notice
your seat or tire melting before anything else went wrong.

Imagine what the same heat is doing to your expensive car! Though surely less
attention was paid to the idea, I’m sure your unicycle was built with a fairly
wide temperature range in mind. It would take a lot of heat to damage any of the
unicycles I’ve seen.

Cold on the other hand can do some damage to Miyata seats. In years past,
bringing a cold unicycle in from outside and riding it on the gym floor has lead
to cracked or broken seat bumpers. Maybe that’s why I don’t live in Michigan
anymore…

Another thing to consider about unicycles in cars: In the trunk they are not
exposed to sunlight. I used to leave them in the back of my station wagon, where
sunlight eventually messes up the rubber in the tires. The UV apparently takes
away most of the grippiness in the rubber. If you ride only outside, you will
probably not notice the difference. But if you do lots of riding on smooth
surfaces (like I used to) you will have to cover those tires with a blanket or
something while in the car.

Re: Keeping Uni In Car?

I carry all 6 of my uni’s, 8’ beam, clubs and balls in my van everywhere I go!!!
So when my wife goes shopping in a store, my 9 year old daughter and I stay
outside to ride. The only problem that I have, is that the air pressure seems to
go down faster. Yes, I also carry a pump.
