Justice after 38 years

http://www.msnbc.com/msn/567424.asp?cp1=1

I had tried to get down to this trial and never made it. Local news was
reporting empty seats in the courtroom everyday. I haven’t figured out if
the lack of spectators was apathy or something else. Anyway, it took the
jury about 2 1/2 hours to convict Blanton who has proclaimed his innocence
throughout his arrest and trial.

I bring it up because there is still a tremendous amount of racism here in
the Birmingham area. My own neighbors won’t let their child come over to
play because the black children from up the street are often over. They
were not shy about telling me that either. Is it years of brain washing or
just sheer stupidity on their part? Will this kind of blind hate last for
all eternity? Will this conviction after all these years really provide
healing in our community like several local ministers claim it will? I
have serious doubts but I sure don’t have any answers either.

Too bad Alabama does not have the death penalty. :-/

Its sheer stupidity and brain washing. Hopefully one generation will be
smart enough to tell their parents to fuck off when they try to brainwash
their child.

Personally I think we got 85% of the problem licked… but the last 15%
will take a long time, and the last 5% of that will never be solved.

I think you could say it will provide “some” healing… it was a long time
between the end of slavery and the civil rights movement and I suspect it
could be as long from the civil rights movement to the end of this shit.

Personally I don’t understand peoples fear of things different (the root
of racism and intolerance) I always enjoyed experiencing different things
be they cultures, religions, what have you.

Alabama does have a death penalty. Tommy Blanton Jr was convicted of
Murder1, not Capital Murder. I am not sure why that was.

Should have figured. Southern states seem to be more tolerant of the
death penalty.
