Just rode a 'century' on a uni

Three Unatics rode unis in the Century Ride this afternoon. Andrew, a new
member, completed 35 miles or so despite never having ridden more than
about 5-10 miles. He was borrowing my 26" Sem. My brother, John, completed
84 miles on a 29" Sem (28" Sem with fat tire). I rode 102 miles on my
Coker in just under 12 hours (2.5 hours were for breaks). I think John’s
accomplishment is more impressive because it’s sorta possible to imagine
that on a Coker, he’d have gone 112 miles or so.

Stats:
Flats: 1 (Andrew – he repaired it at home and rejoined the ride).
UPDs: 0 (tho I had two near-spills which I was lucky to pull out of)

Personal:
Miles: 102
Time: Started at 6:06am; finished at 6:00pm.
Average velocity : 0 mph. When you start and stop in the same place, the
velocity is zero.
Average Speed: 10.4mph when riding, 8.5mph all together. Note that the
10.4 was brought way down by my exhaustion at the end. Over the first 50
miles I maintained an avg of 12.3mph.
Fluids consumed: I think I had 11-12 liters, mainly Gatorade (sometimes
just water). That comes out to one every 8-9 miles. I also ate lots of
watermelon, oranges, and bananas.
Bikers passed: Tons, mainly on uphills.
Times people shouted “You’re the man!”: Too many to count. That’s partly
what kept me going.
What hurts: Those muscles that allow you to tap your feet – man, those a
killing! Crotch and bottom – I walk a bit like a cowboy, and my derriere
feels like someone thru a cheese grater into my bike shorts.

A fun ride, but I may never want to uni again!

AWESOME! Don’t worry - you’ll feel like riding a uni again soon. Last Sunday
I did a big ride with over 12,500’ of descent and my legs were really sore 2
and 3 days afterwards. This morning, 7 full days later, I could still feel
it in my thigh muscles a little. But I was ready to go and the ride today
was great fun: up and down 3300’ on Cokers. You’ll be back in no time!

Seriously, 100 miles in a day is amazing.

Just because David Stone can do it doesn’t mean it’s possible.

Congratulations, David! I know you’ve been thinking about that century ever since last year’s ride. A fantastic accomplishment!

Sounds like an achievement! Way to go.

Thanks for the congrats from Dave here and Nathan elsewhere (and Greg’s
funny comment). I decided NOT to take out the Coker this morning
(otherwise I’d have faced a 22 mile commute). The TRAIN is looking much
comfier now.

As for another Century: My daughter asked me yesterday, “Are you going to
do that again next year?” I told her I didn’t feel like looking at another
uni ever again and that I didn’t see the point in another Century. But
this morning I feel better enough that I am strongly considering the ride
for 2003 (and some other long rides before then).

I’ll switch to the Sem airseat first, tho, and use lots of cyclist cream.

By the way, it hurt less to pee this morning than yesterday (razor
blades), but I think that’s my body’s way of saying, “More short breaks is
better than fewer long breaks.” Ouch.

Cool David,

You did it! Also, congrats to John & Andrew! I HATE walking up stairs after a long ride!

I’m training for my 3rd MS150 in a row in Oklahoma. I’m not riding nearly as much as before and in terrible shape, but the amazing rush I get on long rides is enough to keep trying!

I rode in Hotter 'N Hell bike ride 2 weeks ago (50 miles) with 7000
cyclists. It was 101 degrees F at 12:15 when I finished. There were hundreds of people cheering me on at the finish.

Wow!
What else can I say?
Wow! I take my hat off and abase myself before you.

I skim read that wrong and had to read it again 'cause I was sure you didn’t say THAT, and you didn’t, phew.

David, what a great achievement, wish I could do half of that, well done.

Gary

WOW! You rock. That is A LOT of miles in one day. Congrats on a great achievement. Best of luck on the recovery!

7000 cyclists? What a scene! That heat would’ve wilted me…you’re the man!
Yeah I bet they were cheering you on at the finish!

So what advice do you have for all of us planning a century?

I admit I’m going to cheat on my first one and do it in metric

Peter

I think I’ll adopt a Harper-type goal for myself:

100-B-4-100

Re: Just rode a ‘century’ on a uni

Congrats to all four of you!!!

And Mark, thanx again for babysitting me through the roller coaster hills of
the 26 mile event we did. That killed me! You’re great to ride with.

Re: Just rode a ‘century’ on a uni

Awesome achievement David! Just the other day a non-rider asked me how
far one could ride on a unicycle, and I mentioned that the very best
can get 100 miles. So there you are!

>Fluids consumed: I think I had 11-12 liters, mainly Gatorade (sometimes
>just water). That comes out to one every 8-9 miles.
You almost beat my car for uneconomic fuel consumption.

>A fun ride, but I may never want to uni again!
Someone in r.s.u. recently observed that all long distance riders
seemed to quit unicycling after achieving a major distance. I sure
hope there is no ground in that??
