Just curious, how many uni riders out there do other sports with similar difficulty as well, ie, trials, gymnastics, circus arts, acrobatics etc?
used to do gymnastics, but wasn’t very good. just recreational, never good enough for a team.
I dabble in acrobatics. My daughter Jorga, who also rides, is into
gymnastics. And for circus arts: the juggling-unicycling link is found
very often but not (yet?) in my family beyond the very basics.

I can also juggle pretty well, I can juggle 4 balls, and I almost have 5 balls down, maybe I can do all that on a unicycle sometime.
Used to play Underwater Hockey (Octopush) for the Aberdeen Reef Rats and
occasionally for the Scottish National Squad.
For those who don’t know what Underwater Hockey is - it’s playing hockey
on the bottom of a swimming pool and no you don’t have an air tank
on,which can be real problem at the Aberdeen pool where we played at the
5m deep end.
I’ve been rock climbing, potholing, canoeing, sailboarding, scubadived on
the German Grand Fleet in Scapa Flow and ran a relay race round the whole
of Cumbria (200 miles requiring every person to run the equivalent of a
marathon both days of the run)
Was also member of the local territorial infantry regiment and on weekends
when I wasn’t doing that I used to run a 20 mile round trip
(Barrow-in-Furness to the back end of Ulverston, check it on a map) just
for a laugh. Once ran from Millom to Ulverston and back because I’d run
out of money and there was no cash machines in Millom. That’s a 36 mile
round trip just to be able to buy a round of drinks at the bar that night
and was still fit to walk up Black Coombe the next morning.
I think you’ll find that most unicyclist have a rather strong streak of
attitude. Just to learning to unicycle takes a level of perseverance which
most people just don’t have. Never mind putting up with the cries of
“where’s the other wheel” for the nth time. It’s only natural that we’d be
interested in other sports which take the same level of skill and
dedication. Personally my current to do list includes paragliding and a
light aircraft pilots license - yeah if I win the lottery.

I can only juggle 3 Klutz balls. (okay, everybody give me a big pat on the
back and root for me! LOL) Remember the Klutz books? I haven’t seen those
books in a long time. I wonder if they stopped selling them alltogether. I
never did involved with any stuff (gymnastics, etc).

I find juggling to be at least as hard, though it doesn’t work the whole
body like unicycling and the other sports you listed.

Well… I do all the circus arts - from globe walking to slackrope to
clubs. I also do trials bike riding, windsurfing, skiing, skateboarding,
blading, surfing, snowboarding kiteboarding, sailing and trials/street
uniing. I think that’s about it
Probably the best training for any of these in case you’re interested is
martial arts - I do capoeira (fancy brazillian thing) and ninjitsu (ninja
type style) - they keep you fit, flexible and teach you how to fall
properly and how to take damage (i have a scar under my right eye from a
sword training accident!)
Well that’s my say done
