juggling whilst idling

Is there some dark secret to idling and juggling at the same time? I am learning
the hard way by just being very persistent - a lot of it seems to be that the
idling starts to fail, and then I have to make a sharp manoeuver to recover,
whereupon the balls go everywhere. If i idle consistently - which takes huge
concentration and a very flat surface, then I can easily manage a few cycles
with the balls.

Do you need to be excellent at idling before you can idle and juggle well?
