journal of a bc wheeler

Day one

I just receive a bedford bc wheel with alexa rims and long plates today. to commemorate this momentous event I have decided to make this both my first post and my first journal entry about learning how to bc wheel. This journal will be modeled after 'dude with a sock"'s journal about learning how to unicycle only it will cover my progession as I learn tricks and experiment. So here it goes.

What I did today

Today was the day that I recieved my wheel. It arrived around 4:45 pm and it gets dark at around 5:30 pm these days so I only got a chance to practice for about 45 min:( . However I learned a lot about bc wheeling and was able to mount the bc wheel and roll 5 feet about 5 times before it got too dark to see outside. Overall this was a good start.

Tips I learned

  1. Wear shin gaurds. These can be the kind you use for soccer or the special kind but they really help when your firs learning.
  2. practice on a hill. When your first learning a hill with a slight incline is the best place to practice because it gives you some momementum thus allowing you to concentrate on mounting.
  3. when first learning to mount use the skate mount. the skate mount was much easier for me to learn for me than the rolling mount.
  4. If your using a long plated bc wheel from bedford make sure you use thin soled shoes like converses or the bolts will get in the way. When i was first trying to ride the wheel I was using sneakers and the bolts were hindering my foot when i switched to converses I had much more sucess.

comments and suggestions greatly apprieciated.

The way I learned, and something you may want to try, it to start between two chairs and push off down a driveway or small hill. This is an excellent way to get used to the BC, and makes it easier to learn to mount later.

thanks. Ill try that tommorrow. even though now it seems like ive learned how to mount anyway.

I’m just learning also to but i started a day ago but anyway

Day 2
Bent my hub since it’s dinky, got 20 feet in 45 minutes, got the idea of a skateboard mount…still using our gates to push off.

Well I’m flattered that you liked my original idea. ^^

Day 3

Tried to find another hub…unsucessful. Had about no time to practice since 06’ torker LX finally came and had to try it. When finally tried chipped T.V. on side and was banned from riding inside :frowning:

Just ride with your feet further back so your toes go under the bolts…that’s what I do.

Day two and three
sorry I didn’t get to post yesterday. I progressed a lot. basically I just did what I did in day one. I can now skate mount and ride 8 feet about 80% of the time. I changed my opinion about the shoes . now im just using the tennis shoes because they give me more support.

does anyone have suggestions on the best way to gain momentum on flat ground?

update
sorry about my leave of abscence. I wont be able to practice for about three more days because on day 4 i sprained my wrist. I was able to make some good progress though. now i have to wear wrist gaurds when i practice.
