Jethro Makes A Big Statement With His Current Signature!!!!!

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy? ~Mahatma Gandhi

  1. Is this a rhetorical question? The rhetorical question is usually defined as any question asked for a purpose other than to obtain the information the question asks.

  2. If it is a rhetorical question, not trying to obtain the information asked, what is the purpose of this question?

  3. I think Jethro is trying to make us THINK!!!

  4. If he is, what’s he want us to think about, and why?

  5. In what ways are Jethro and Gandhi alike?

PS: If Jethro has me on his ignore list, will he even know this thread is here?

I am not sure the entire context of the quote, but I would presume that its intent is to question the “just war” argument.

It is not a merely rhetorical question.

Billy, are you asking a rhetorical question?

The question is, what do we mean when we say, “rhetorical question”?

Did Billy have sexual relations with that woman?

Rather than being not a merely rhetorical question, we should say [because it deals with something so important] that it is no mere rhetorical question.

Maybe. Scientific polls show the following

Do you prefer the mad destruction was wrought under the name of

Sample...... Totalitarianism....Liberty/Democracy...."Makes No Difference"

Dead People…25%…35%…45%
Orphans…45%…25%…35%
Homeless…35%…45%…25%

As you can see, 45% of dead people polled said it made no difference, while only 35% of orphans and 25% of the homeless said it made no difference. You can’t make this stuff up!

I think Jethro is trying to make us THINK!!!/QUOTE]
What good is thinking about such a monumental problem? The starving, homeless orphans can’t eat thoughts, nor can they take shelter underneath our good will.

I think Jethro is trying to make us TAKE ACTION!!!

Dead people…yum.

  1. Not sure. I’ll have to think about that for a while.
  2. To pose a not-so-subtle statement of opinion under the guise of a question mark.
  3. Apparently.
  4. He wants us to think about how much easier it is to appeal to pity than to formulate and implement real solutions.
  5. Unqualified to answer – I don’t know Jethro, and I’ve only talked philosophy with Ghandi over a cup of S*arbucks once. The carmel machiato was great (I think it was a venti), but I don’t recall now exactly what we talked about. They both seem like nice enough people, though.

Jethro: The Lord Works In Mysterious Ways

A more recent poll, just of those who died in the last week, ALL of them said it made no difference. Scientists are wondering if this is a trend.

I have to agree, you’ve got a good guess here, but it seems low to suggest this of either Gandhi OR Jethro.
