Jacinta - Hints for a new unicycle owner

Hi Jacinta,

Wayne here from Australia

good on you for getting a uni. Hip hip horay!

A few hints about…

Sore knees,

  1. make sure that the saddle is the correct height - leg fully extended to the
bottom pedal when full weight is on the seat.

2.when you ride have as much weight on the saddle as humanly possible. Taking
the weight off the pedals will reduce the amount of strain on your legs and
will dramatically improve your riding style.

About the pedal falling off,

You are probably riding the thing backwards. Yes, they do have a front and a
back. On the inside face of your cranks there should be a ‘R’ (for Right) and an
‘L’ (you guessed it, for Left).

Pedals also come in left and right.

The Right pedal screws into the right crank and the left pedal into the
left crank.

The right foot goes on the right pedal and the left on the left.

If you ride it with the feet on the wrong pedals they will unscrew and fall off.
You are lucky that you didn’t wreck the crank. The cranks used on the Taiwanese
made unicycles (usually any unicycle under $300.00 if you live in NZ or AUS.)
are not very strong and have a tendency to get threaded if the pedals are ridden
backwards.

putting the pedals on with loc-tite or some other metal grip/glue is also a
good idea.

Yes - Thor is the Thunder god.

Forth rode the Thunder god, riding on his filly “I’m Thor”, he cried. His horse
replied “You’ve forgotten your thaddle thilly”.

Silly’s! Thor is the VIKING god of thunder. The greek didn’t have an equivalent,
thought they did have the chief god, Zeus throwing thunderbolts, and the god of
metalworkers doing the sound effects!

About the pedals, loc-tite is good, or other glue. Mine are currently wielded.
But then, they are good strong pedals - if yours are the sort that fall apart
don’t wield them on!

yep, I did mean “welded”. I’ve had plastic pedals - they were quite good - but
they still had a metal ‘axle’ which threaded into the crank and that 's the bit
where the heat went.

You can’t weld steel to aluminum, can you? yeah, I guess you would have to trust
your pedals if you wanted to weld them on. I’ve had to work on some myself this
past week. The aluminum cage was riveted to the hull. And after a little rough
use or something, the rivets came loose and the whole thing creaked going down
the road. so I yanked the rivets out and put in 5mm bolts where each rivet was.
Now it’s solid, but now I also laugh-- RIVETS!!!(&^&R*&^%())(()=+

Do you mean welded? Or is this some word I haven’t heard of? Anyway, my
pedals are plastic. Something tells me this isn’t a good idea  But thanks
for the tip
