iTunes finally goes DRM-free.

Apple just announced at MacWorld that 8 million of the 10 million songs on iTunes will be DRM-free starting today, and the rest will be DRM-free by the end of the first quarter. FINALLY!! Plus, you can now purchase song via 3G to your iPhone directly. Lastly, the per-song pricing is going to change from $0.99 for everything to one of three prices - $0.69 (older songs), $0.99, and $1.29 (more popular songs).

Wow, nice. I’m not sure I like the $1.29 though, haha. Whatever, I usually don’t listen to popular songs anyway

iTunes has had DRM-free songs for over a year now, I think. They started at $1.29 while the DRM versions of the same songs could be had for $.99. I assume this started with a limited amount of songs at first and has been growing since then. The Macworld announcement also reflects how iTunes is reacting to the current economy; lower prices!

The changeover to no DRM is probably, in part, a reaction to the success of Amazon.com’s music store, which seems very popular!

Anyway, this is perfect timing for the iTunes gift card I got for Christmas…

Sorry, what DRM means?!

Yeah, I’m lost.

Digitaly Re - Mastered?

Read and hate.

Hmm, good for them. Still not enough to persuade me to like Apple/Itunes enough to use it though.

Hate alot

I’m still unsure of whether they will be eliminating DRM from the ITMS or just that every song available will have the DRM free option for 30¢ more.

Hooray!

I think that’s been the current setup (for the last year or so). According to the initial post, the intent is to remove all DRM by April. But I haven’t read any actual articles about all this…

Now if they’ll switch to lossless. ALAC would work buy FLAC would be better for me. I don’t want AAC. I’ve standardized on MP3 or lossless.

The Amazon MP3 store is awesome. High quality MP3. Never had DRM. Would be nice if they started offering lossless FLAC.

All of iTunes Plus songs, which was the title used for the DRM free songs in the past, were convertable to mp3 directly through iTunes, thus I’m thinking/hoping this is how all songs will be from now on.

I like the lack of DRM, since I was trying to hide my disappointment at getting a $15 iTunes giftcard for X-mas  I’m sure I would have found something DRM-free I would have listened to, but I hacked my iPod to get away from Apple lock-in.

And the clincher for me to not buy a new iPod: Apparently the new ones only charge on iTunes equipped computers. That doesn’t work for me!

Too little too late.

I’ll stick with my sony walkman’s and downloads from Amazon (£3 for some popular albums).

One of my complaints with buying digital music (like from the Amazon MP3 store) is the quality of the cover art. I consider cover art to be an important part of the album experience. The quality of the cover art can vary greatly from extremely poor to just passable. Some of the cover art images are scanned by people who obviously have no concept or understanding of proper color or even proper scanning techniques or even basic image touchup. It is really pathetic.

I’m often inclined to buy a CD and scan the cover art myself rather than buy the digital download just because of the quality of the cover art included with the digital download.

Really? I got a wall charger for 20$ from walmart. You can probably get them pretty cheap from any place that has iPods.

You’re right, I mispoke… I meant when charging from a computer, though I asked a friend who works at an Apple-centric store (though not an Apple Store) if it was true and he said no, they’ll charge off any computer’s USB. I was inclined to believe it though, Sony, another company that is notorious for forcing their way on consumers, won’t let the 1st generation Sony Reader charge off USB unless it’s a Windows computer that has the Sony software on it. Ironically, our 2G Sony Walkman charges off anything…
