I am sorry to post about this, but I need to get it out of my system.
I have been on a soap box about the use of the word gay as an expression of negativity on the fora.
Tonight, I went to the source: my bro, who is gay and out in the open about it. He’s very dear to me and I told him that I had been persistent in expressing my disapproval about the use of the word gay as a slam.
I asked him if he found it offensive when people use it as a derogatory term. This was his reply:
Laughing, “Well, Blake, no. The people who use it are just clueless and totally 80’s.”
There you have it. Right from the source, downtown SF, USA. All you folks who call things gay: it’s not offensive, you’re just clueless and totally 80’s.
I am sorry if I offended anyone while on my PC soapbox. I will now graciously step down with this apology, and wonder why I was left in the 60’s…
I was born in '90, and I’m sure I’m gonna get laughed at for this, but what the heck does ‘totally 80’s’ mean?
-edit-
And, in the nicest way possible, do be quiet…you have absolutely nothing to apologize for…you had/have a belief, and you stood up for it…nothing wrong with that.
I don’t know who said this, but I heard a quote once, that went like “I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight like hell for your right to say it”
You’re such a fag, smear the queer, quit being such a homo, and many more 80’s phrases for the uninitiated.
The 80’s probably represent the “Comming Out” for the homo sexual community as a whole. This was a very volitale time and many of the phrases I listed above were very common. We as kids used to play a game of “keep away” called smear the queer. Funny thing is at the time most of us had no idea that “queer” had anything to do with being gay. We had no idea that using the word “gay” in a derogitory way really had much to do with homosexuality. Heck for that matter, most of us had no idea that the Village people were gay, and what having a good time at the Y.M.C.A was really about either. In retrospect the Village People and many other gays really have to be laughing about that joke. We all sang that song at the top of our lungs dancing along and forming out the leters with our arms. Oh the age of innocence.
And here’s an 80’s server, in case any of you folks feel right at home!
I think you should get the idea. I don’t think too many 17 year olds would want to be perceived as 80’s these days. But there may be some choice clydesdales who find today totally illin’, and like think someone was totally a major dweeb for thinking Boy George was like a faggot or something, you know, I mean really he was totally tubular and like all you lame hosers on unicycles are so wannabe homeboys.
I too do not like when people use the word gay as a put down, like, “That is gay.” I will admit, back in Elementary school, I had about a month long phase where I said things where gay, but that was about 6 years ago and now I dont. I grew up, the people that still say it, they should too.
i loooove 80s music! i actually am livin in the 80s just a little bit, and i loooove culture club too, "Karma Chameloen"was made about boy georges being so “different” and people not being exactly cool about boy georges “differentness”
