On this day, 25 years ago, John Lennon was still alive.
Man, time flies. I was in college in Salt Lake, and had just returned to my apartment after hours in the laundromat when I got a call from a high school friend who was living in New York City. Soon it was all over the national news, but I was glad I heard it from my bud, someone who shared my passion for great music. Plus we had cleaned a lot of weed together with the White Album.
Rest In Peace John…Imagine what a difference you made.
It was twenty-five years ago today,
Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play
I was in junior high when John Lennon was shot. I don’t remember where I was or what I was doing that day. I do remember that the news that day was sad.
And it always takes me till halfway thru the morning before I remember that it’s also Jim Morrison’s birthday.
Wow. I remember that day. My older brother couldn’t stop shaking.
I wasn’t born yet, but I saw this thing on Dateline about it, and they had interviews with the guy that killed him and he seemed crazy.
Much, much more significantly, it was 64 years and one day ago that Pearl Harbor was still alive. Sad that there was no thread devoted to it. Sorry, John Lennon pales in comparison.
who else hates it when john_childs changes the words?
It’s true. John Lennon was great, but his death did not lead to mass extermination of Japanese at Hiroshima-Nagasaki or the liberation of Aushwitz, etc.
Pearl was such a sweet woman, reminded me a bit of Ms. Ayelery, no?

In NYC, 104.3 and other stations are playing all John Lennon and Beatles today. I didn’t know he released an oldies album in 1975, including a cover of Stand By Me.
And the NYTimes Op-Ed page has a large photo of John and Yoko, taken just weeks before he died. Before Lennon died, Yoko had asked the photography for permission to use it on their 1980 Christmas card. Don’t know if it was used…
Song: Gimme Some Truth Lyrics
I’m sick and tired of hearing things
From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth
I’ve had enough of reading things
By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth
No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of tricky dicky
Is gonna mother hubbard soft soap me
With just a pocketful of hope
Money for dope
Money for rope
No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of tricky dicky
Is gonna mother hubbard soft soap me
With just a pocketful of soap
Money for dope
Money for rope
I’m sick to death of seeing things
From tight-lipped, condescending, mama’s little chauvinists
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth now
I’ve had enough of watching scenes
Of schizophrenic, ego-centric, paranoiac, prima-donnas
All I want is the truth now
Just gimme some truth
No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of tricky dicky
Is gonna mother hubbard soft soap me
With just a pocketful of soap
It’s money for dope
Money for rope
Ah, I’m sick and tired of hearing things
From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocrites
All I want is the truth now
Just gimme some truth now
I’ve had enough of reading things
By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians
All I want is the truth now
Just gimme some truth now
All I want is the truth now
Just gimme some truth now
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth

The same could be said for Greg Harper… and that’s why I’m celebrating today
That is technically true.
But Harper is still in a coma…
I doubt any here was alive for pearl harbor, but many were alive for John Lennon. It hits home for people. My generation remembers when Cobain killed himself.
I’m with you.
But Cobain was no John Lennon.
Neither was Elizabeth Taylor.
Harper: Did we wake you???!!

lol… and that same ritual still lives on today…
also reccomended the magical mystery tour.
Yes, that one also works. Perhaps some day someone will start a thread about the “best record albums for de-seeding”, and we can nominate favorites and argue the nuances. My favorite might be Yes, Close to The Edge. Great two-panel illustration by Roger Dean. That’s one piece of album art that sure didn’t translate to CD format. Of course, if we’re forced to look at the cons as well as the pros, the illustration used many shades of green…making it a little easier to lose track of things versus the White Album.
Pink Floyd’s The Wall has some of the essential characteristics. It’s a double album and it’s a light enough colour.
And the music is pretty kewl.
I just can’t imagine a bunch of coke-heads ever having a discussion about the best CD-cover to snort from.
Bah.
But quite naturally Procul Harem’s “Whiter Shade of Pale” is the ideal album to separate hydrocodone from APAP using its water solubility.
Harper: What album do you recommend for separating the nuclear waste from my vegatables?
