It's a movement!

Hi,

Recently I’ve being hearing lots of stories about people getting into unicycling
all over Vancouver BC, and all of them are especially keen on trials/MUni. It’s
so exciting that this sport is catching on! Maybe in a few years it won’t be a
surprise to see a unicyclist on the trails (OK maybe I’m dreaming now).

If that happens in Vancouver, sound like you deserve most of the credit!

I’ve never seen anyone I did know. Only the people who were riding with
me.

I don’t know if Bruce Clifton reads this newsgroup, but he’s in Modesto and has
a club. I’ll dig up his address or email and pass it along.

I rode with his group, Uni Psycho Mania, in a July 4 parade last year. That was
the most unicycles in a parade I’ve ever ridden with outside of a unicycle
meet. About 50!

That’s great to hear! Has anyone, anywhere, anytime on a muni ride ever seen a
unicyclist out on the trail (not just bike path or something, I mean really off
road) that you didn’t know?

Just curious - I don’t think I ever have. I look forward to the day.

RE: It’s a movement!

Related story:

I ride the train to work each day and bring my bicycle to ride the mile to my
office. Once I can go that distance of course I plan on riding my unicycle. As I
was strapping in my bicycle on my return trip home last Wednesday, a fellow
named Ken strapped in his 6 foot giraffe next to my bicycle. Ken is 39, has been
riding since he was 8, lives in Modesto, CA, and had never met another
unicyclist. Needless to say, I gave him a number of web sites to check out. He
isn’t too computer- literate, but his son is. I also gave him the 1-800-UNICYCLE
phone number because he was in need of some parts. The giraffe is a Rodgers
brand according to Ken.

I think there is a Unicycling club in Modesto, and I kept Ken’s phone number, so
if you’re interested in contacting him, please e-mail me. Although he had never
heard of the USA, he was very interested when I showed him my membership card (I
never thought it would come in handy, to tell you the truth). Ken was really
jazzed when I told him about the skills levels. Until then, he thought he was
doing everything possible on a unicycle. Not quite everything, as he found out,
but he is perhaps a Level 6 rider.

I started unicycling in early June and have enjoyed it very much. For the past 3
weeks I’ve been riding on 1 wheel in the woods on our mountain bike trails and
enjoying it more than the MTB. I built a Muni by modifying a 24" Schwinn to
accept a 26" tire. This Muni works well in our rocky terrain up in north Jersey.
Most moutain bikers are sour browns on the trail when exposed to one wheel
riding. A few riders have expressed interest in this type of riding though. I’m
trying to generate more interest in this unique activity through exposure and my
local bike shop. This activity has worked well for me and I think there are
other people that would also enjoy it.

Re: It’s a movement!

I have run into another muni rider off road, but it was someone I knew. About a
year ago I was riding on a trail and got a stranger than usual look from a MTB
rider I passed. He said something, I can’t recall at the moment exactly what it
was, but it something like, “Another one?” A few minutes later I saw a young
college student, whom I had taught how to ride when he was in my Scout troop a
couple years before, riding toward me on a Pashley Muni that he had just
received as a birthday present. I had been riding on trails with him before, but
had no idea that he would be out that day or that he had a Muni. The MTB had
overtaken him earlier on the trail.

I have talked to MTBers who had seen Brett Bymaster (or at least it sounded
like Brett from their description) riding on trails and wanted to know if I
knew that guy.

All the best,

John Hooten
