It is time for leg armor

All,

The only leg armor pieces I use are shin guards. Now I’m starting to do some downhill off-road things and I’m going to need leg armor. Grr! The largest 661’s didn’t fit me (as of 6 months ago). Are the largest Roach pads any larger? I may have to special order. Advice?

I had a great time at Clear Springs trails in Mississippi. There are some very hilly (for here) sections … there are steep elevation changes of 100-200 feet over pretty short distances in some places! It surprised me. On one downhill section, I fell onto my unicycle and my pedals left me a badge of honor (again). So, I need to upgrade.

animation, he hurts himself in missisipi too,

theres more to shin gaurds than 661 and roach. seek and ye shal find. i’ve got some norco pads that are great.

Nice gams, Lewis. Glad I got to see them live and in pristine condition. Just don’t fall next time.

Greg,

Dont fall? Simple as that, eh? I’ll try.

Lewis

Well, at least don’t fall “down”.

B

Looks alot like my leg.

I just recently purchased some Roach DS Leg Armor with Custom fabric work ($5 cnd more). They do all sort costom jobs if you just ask. So if you need a larger size I’m sure they can accomadate for you and make you some sweet pads. Shipping kicked my ass, but I paid about the same you would from Unicycle.com or anyother online shop, for custom pads before shipping.

Remember chicks did scars.

Chex

Had to laugh, sorry. I assume you meant “dig” scars.

Bruce

Haha yeah Dig I really do have to watch the typo’s sometimes.

Chex, post some pics of the custom armor. Did you get checkerboard pattern on them?? The suspense is killing me. I like Kris Holm’s flame pattern Roaches.

Mojoe out

Checkernuts,

What are these “chicks” of which you speak?

There are lots of different types of leg armour, ranging from soft to hard plastic. Roach, 661, Azonic, Troy Lee Designs, Hoots, Fox, Lizard Skins, Dianese, Kona to name a few.
If you have shinguards why not just buy knee pads to add to them.
I personally am a Lizard Skins fan and have been using them for years for bike trials/ mountain biking. I’ve broken a knee cup on a knee/shin combo and the store I purchased them from gave me a straight exchange. They seem to fit fairly large, but I haven’t compared the sizing with roach.
Good luck.

Wow… those birds really love mine, clucking excitably all over the place. I don’t think I can bring myself to eat eggs again…

Phil, just me

Lewis,

Could you post video of your wound? Included a few moments in UV.

Thanx,

-Christopher

Drewnicycle,

I think websites or any other info on these leg armour alternatives would be helpful to many who are buying over the internet. I have the 661’s, but have still been nailed (pedalled?) on the back and inside of my legs. Still looking. Of course, I could just learn to stay on the seat.

Got any more info?

Chris,

There is a video of the injury, and it is entirely in UV. I guess you didn’t see it.

Btw, Godzilla Melee Destroy All Monsters is out for the gamecube, so I picked it up, along with 3 more WaveBirds. It could be an amusing distraction.

How’d the flying go, or did it?

OH and today I went down that shallow flight of 7 stairs on the Belhaven campus. I did it 3 times to make sure it wasnt a fluke, and all 3 were successful!

Arent there pics somewhere of when Scott Bridgeman hit his knee on a rock , and the rock went right through his kneeguard, and he couldnt ride for a month. Correct me if im wrong

With 2 tasks left to clear for the mountain, I stuck the first perfect… then proceded to choke, with progressively worse flights, culminating in a 15’ Super Man landing (dive, dive some more, flare right before impact with lots of energy, then go from .5’ to 15’ in 2 seconds, hold the flare hard, and come to earth like Superman- land like a feather).

Got blown out this morning (gusting into the teens on the training hill), so didn’t get an opertunity to complete my last task. Spent the morning working on wing loading in messy air… not a typical skill for a Novice, but a skill I will want to develope. Very different experience to have the wing flying before initiating my launch. I flubed it for some time -until the instructor told me to ‘fly it like you’re riding a unicycle’, the aquivelent to telling me to ‘turn off my targeting computer’ -worked, too.

THAT ROCKS! WHooooooooooo hoooo. Shallow or not, you still have to deal with being pitched, asserting controll- valueable skills. Some steeper steps that are deep feel alot like those- drop recover, roll, drop recover… the steps that lead down to the ‘Football’ field are an extream example. Steep stuff that’s not too deep feels more like a controlled slide- continueouse.

I think for your next set of steps, either the sets of 3 down from the foutain at Millsaps, then/or those across the streat from your house.

Sorry I couldn’t be around to watch you get hurt. I almost bailed on the gliding to go… almost.

Later,

-Christopher

Chris,

OH ok, you are still over there. Be careful man, we dont want to lose you! Personally, I’m glad you didn’t stick both. I want you to progress, but I’d hate for you to “fluke” into the next category, only to be unprepared … not that I know anything about it at all! But you know what I mean.

Both sound like excellent suggestions. I will probably try my luck at the ones on Belhaven a few more times. As you may recall, there are 2 shallow flights back to back, it’d be cool to ride down both, but I shouldnt do it unless/until there are no cars at the bottom of the second flight. Also, while I made it 3 times, I’d say I wasnt 100% comfortable, just 75%. So, I’d like to work on those. But the ones you recommend would be cool.

It rocked! The Clear Springs trails are really nice, lots of hills, a nice path around a lake, etc. There is a 12 mile trail, a 5 mile trail, and the 1 mile lake trail. The Park Ranger has built most of a new 8 mile trail too. He himself is an off-road bike type, so he has a personal interest in making the trails nice for biking. He claims the new 8 mile section will be the finest trail in the south … a tall order, but I liked his enthusiasm. Jeff and I even offered to volunteer once a month or so. I may go down on the 26th for a work day. The park ranger also walked the trail on foot with a gps and overlaid it with some topo maps and he has some nice up-to-date trail maps he is going to send me. Cool stuff.

Oh, and I finally bought a metric / english socket set, plus a metric / english hex wrench set. So, I can actually do some work on my unicycles now!

Finally, yes, the Godzilla game was in stock so I bought 3 more wavebirds and the game. It was cool, I defeated about 7 or so monsters, but Mecha Godzilla whomped my behind. He was in a totally different class. Then again, I only know about 20% of the moves I can do.

Lewis

Good. You can DO this, Lewis. Get in there and take them apart.

And congratulations on the stair rides. They’re a gas. Lots easier than hopping up them.
