Is there a time when it becomes normal?

Hi there,

Something I have been thinking about for a few days now, as my hours of unicycling experience increase, is whether it becomes natural to unicycle?

I know there is a point, which I think I have reached, where you sort of “get” the balance of the unicycle and you can go pretty far. However, to me it still doesn’t feel normal, it is still a slightly strange experience!

So, my question to you all is, when (if ever) does unicycling truly feel normal? When was that time for you?

I look forward to all of your responses!

Many thanks

Mark Watson

You ride, you look down, you see your own shadow riding one wheel. You go “Holy Shit, I can ride a unicycle!!!”.

Then, a few days later it’s normal.

Yeah, I feel just as stable riding as I do walking for the most part. Once you get better it slowly just becomes an extension of you.

It’s only normal when you’re in a big group of unicyclists. Otherwise, you’re an abnormal freak in the world of not-unicyclists.

Why isn’t this thread in Rec.Sport.Unicycling?

im more stable on a uni, i have no balance at all,
it feels natural once you are confident in yourself that you can go where you want easily on one wheel

i dont think riding in big groupes makes it feel more normal, though it helps, i rarely ride with others, because they dont come out, mentioning no names kieron and james lol.

You get the balance pretty soon. Then for a while, you’ll be riding by a window and see your reflection and be like “Whoa!” but then that goes away soon.

You should post unicycle related threads in the unicycling forum here.

You’ll get more responses and it will keep everything where it’s supposed to be and not clutter up forums.

But it’s an awesome feeling once you first get the balance. Completely effing miiindbloooowinnnnggggggg…

It will feel COMPLETELY normal in a few days.
Now, I feel more comfortable on a uni, rather than walking sometimes.

No. It is completely unnatural TO MAKE A UNICYCLING-RELATED THREAD IN JUST CONVERSATION!

Freak.

that about sums it up

It was normal for me when i could ride to the store, buy some snacks, then ride back.

I think for me i realized unicycling was a normal thing when i started to give bad advice to nonriders because i forgot what it was like to be a beginner

For me it became “normal” when it felt weird walking through town for once.

No. Still feels like I’m flying to me. What a buzz.

Good question. I don’t know when I started thinking of it as “normal,” or otherwise not thinking about riding so much as I rode. It didn’t take long though, but I was pretty fanatical in my early days of riding.

It takes a lot longer to figure out your relationship to the non-unicycling bystanders who never see unicycles and make interesting comments. You’re normal to you, but not to them…

Hi there,

Thanks for all the great responses guys! It was interesting to see your opinions!

Is there anyone here who thinks going out and riding it in new places would make it feel more normal, or is there more to it than that? Have I stumbled on a deep, unicycle-philosophy question here?

Many thanks

Mark Watson

it felt normal to me when I looked down and saw my shadow then thought “holy crap I’m riding and I’m not even trying!” I actually feel more comfortable riding around than walking now going new places and riding my unicycle doesn’t feel much different to me that staying some place normal but I guess being somewhere with comments from people I’ve never met before does feel different, I wouldn’t say more normal but it’s different.

It began to feel normal for me when I found myself riding and completely forgot that I was not walking. Was brought back to that realization by comment from a non-rider.

But the realization that unicycling IS normal hit me only just this week when I met a fellow unicyclist (Gina), and we rode together. I can only imagine how normal it must feel to be surrounded by unicyclists.
