Is Kris Holm a Hypocryte?

DISCLAIMER: This is not an accusation, it is merely a question! Please excuse any hint of assholeness in this post. If it exists, that was NOT how it was meant

With all of this talk of the New Kris Holm Unicycle, I began to think of almost celebrity endorsements. I doubt every “Michael Jordan” shoe has been used by the big guy himself, and hockey players dont really use the sticks that carry their name in sporting good stores. Does Kris really use the same Muni that is available at Unicycle.com? Hey, how about it Kris? Is this just a muni you think would be a good ride, or are you currently riding this very thing?
-David Kaplan

good question, on the last or one of the last replies there was a yahoo ad, and there wasn’t any links to unicycling on the yahoo thing. But that’s not hycpricyt (i gotta learn to spell) just wierd advirtising

Kris was riding it at NUC last summer, testing it out and making sure it could stand up to his abuse. Now if he’s riding it now is a different question… but if it is something else now, I’d bet he’s testing out the next generation MUni.

It is called the Kris Holm Unicycle because Kris Holm designed it. Not because some company made it and said “Hey Kris, here is $10 000 for your name on the unicycle.” Kris designed it, and rides it. I don’t think that makes him a hypocrite. As well, it is commonly refer to as simply a KH. It took me a couple months to figure out that KH stood for “Kris Holm.”

If we started seeing “Kris Holm” branded leg armour, helmets or “Kris Holm” edition Miyata brand saddles, then we can start worrying.

Kris is no sellout.

Caleb Penner

Im almost positive he rides it in his “one tired guy” video, around the streets of South America when he went to Orizaba. I cant confirm this right now, cause my NTSC video died!!!

Leo

As I understand it, Kris designed the thing. (I don’t know to what extent,
but it was built to his specifications, anyway.) I doubt Michael Jordan
has been involved in shoe manufactering.

At NUC, Kris was riding his KH frame, and everyone was checking it out. I
remember when he was talking about the gliding friendly fork how that
seemed almost silly. Well, with the possible exception of a Coker, I’m not
sure I’d ever want a unicycle with a rounded frame again. Gliding is the
best!

Now that there’s finally some snow on the ground around me, I’ve been
riding my muni a lot more. (Gazz 24x3, reeder frame) When I encounter
some dry pavement, I find I tend to work on freestyle stuff on the muni
now… mostly one-footed riding, and wheel walking. It’s a challenge to
convert those freestyle skills from teh 20" to the muni, but man is it
fun. I think the KH, and similarly styled frames are doing a great job
bridging the gap between muni and freestyle. I’m not saying I could ever
give up my freestyle, but it sure is cool to be able to do some of those
tricks on the muni.

Hmm, this is a good thing to bring up- thanks for asking.

To answer the first question, yes I ride the unicycles that have my name on them.

Whether it’s a good idea in the first place to have a “Kris Holm” brand unicycle or other “Kris
Holm” signature brand products is another story. Here’s my take on this:

Like it or not, I realize that due to a heck of a lot of media coverage, I’m a household name in
the mountain bike community, and quite well known to the mainstream public as well. I am also not
naive to the fact that in our culture, celebrity brings a higher level of credibility and
influence than would otherwise be possible (whether I agree with that is another story!).

This high level of exposure, and resulting high level of influence, won’t last forever and while I
have it I’d like to put it to good use. It’s taken a while to get to this point, but people in
industry now take me seriously when I indicate I’m interested in working with them to develop a
product. In my opinion this is very significant, as the production, marketing and distribution
of unicycling products at a large scale is expensive, and most easily conducted by large companies
that may have had little or no previous involvement with our sport. For example, right now I’m
working on a seat with Velo, the seat manufacturer. Mold and development costs for this fairly
basic seat cost over U.S$20,000, but when they’ve developed it they will be able to produce a good
seat for a small fraction of the price of, say, the $230 Carbonfibre airseat. There is
absolutely no way I could have convinced Velo to make this initial investment without the
influence and credibility that comes with celebrity. Yes it will have my signature on it, but
like it or not this “branding” of the product will give it a credibility outside our current
unicycling community that it would not otherwise have.

I find this weird to personally express, but in the mainstream public, my name has become
associated with a perception of the sport that is different than the stereotypes normally
associated with unicycling. In other words, its not an ego issue, nor do I feel that I deserve to
have my name on these more than other riders (especially since I don’t feel that I’m as gifted at
unicycling skills compared to many other riders I’ve met at UNICON and NUC). Rather it’s an
awareness on my part that I have a rare opportunity to change the way millions of people perceive
our sport. Right now, if non-rider goes into a bikeshop and sees a “Kris Holm” brand unicycle on
display, they will perceive it differently and take it more seriously than they might otherwise
have. It’s marketing, pure and simple, but if I can use this to expand people’s understanding of
our sport, and grow the sport in the process, then I think that it’s worth it.

Cheers,

Kris Holm.

Cheers,

Kris.

indeed, well said.

Hey Kris, you coming to Australia anytime soon??

Leo

Hi,

I agree, well said. This has, and will open a door to us. A door for more products, and more spotlight, to let people know that this is a real sport, and to give riders more goods, and more goods of great and even better quality.

The media coverage is also good for providing this doorway. Just as long as others get recognized. So, this way, it doesn’t seem like a one man show. The people should know how many people ride, and how many go “extreme” with their riding. And, obviously Kris has recognized other riders of like talent.

Someday I’m going to get up their in skill level. Probably after I get a KH 24". After a year I’ve done a 21" side hop (what it’s called at NUC, I guess), on a Miyata. So, I know I’m going to need that signature frame. That hop is official for me, not by the NUC. I want to try higher than 4’ drops also. A freestyle cycle with a few mountain parts on it, will only hold up for so long.

Evan

That was a very cool answer, Kris. As always, you have been very straight forward, and humble. I am very proud to have you as a unicycling ambassador to the 2(+) wheeled world.
-David Kaplan

Hey Kris, Well said…

I agree that most of the “Kris Holm” names gives you extra influence for
marketing and obviously for products as well, and that is great. I’m not
really sure why any Unicyclists are concerned with this anyway. Most of the
unicycling marketing (whether that be unicycles, accessories, videos or
whatever) it should be geared to markets outside the unicycling circle to
generate more interest in the sport. Marketing is all about giving people
what they want to hear, and a lot of people know the “Kris Holm” name when
it comes to unicycling so how can that possibly hurt anything. It gives
them that extra connection to unicycling and that just generates more
interest.

Anyway, I think the unicycling growth in the last few years is awesome! If
it means we need to attach names to help promote a new product, what’s so
wrong about that? It’s only going to help us all have more parts, better
equipment and better designs for what we all love, unicycling…

So, our sport is finally becoming its own without the traditional clown and
circus references it has always had and there are more and more riders
continuously working to promote it. So why not help that promotion out
instead of questioning the riders who do the most of it… I know I’m going
to keep promoting unicycling locally here in Calgary as much as possible
whether that’s out selling videos, organizing unicycling events, running a
unicycle club and website or just out riding with other uniers and bikers,
its all fun and I feel all promotion for the sport is great! I personally
love it when I’m out in the mountains or just riding locally here in the
city and some biker approches me as says, “Hey are you Mike King?” or “Are
you that guy with the unicycle web site?” I don’t care even if they ask if
I’m Kris Holm, (which it sounds like a number of people in the group have
heard before) because it usually means I have someone else to ride with and
every now and then it sparks a conversation and gets another person into
unicycling.

Those are my thoughts…

I think that’s a very good point. Unicyclists have gone a direction other
than the mainstream. They have discovered which unicycles are good, and
which are not. They will not buy a product just for a cool name.
Experienced unicyclists can tell what makes a quality unicycle.
Unicyclists also know that different unicycles have different purposes
(this is why we all have 4 or more unicyles in our rooms).

So I really thing that the a Kris Holm branded unicycle or part is not
marketing at all. (At least not to the people who would be most likely to
buy it.) But, as Kris pointed out, it helps market the idea to those who
have to front the cash to make the product in the first place.

Of course, Kris is the man, so owning a unicycle designed by him is just
really cool.

My only question is, why haven’t we seen the John Foss model unicycles, and
when will the John Drummond series come out?

Sent via the Unicyclist Community - http://Unicyclist.com

They’re due out after the Jeff Lutkus student and professional models.

Yeah! I think I have seen Jeff’s custom uni… The one made from bike forks. Totally cool student model! Get those industrial design students at RIT to draw up the plans!

I’m waiting for Erik E’s graduate-student model to roll off the assembly line. It’s the 26" WPI StairMaster!!

Kris, That was a very thougthful reply. Your integrity, decency, and lack of
pretention–as well as your riding and your design ideas–make you an excellent
advocate for our sport. I will thank you from the bottom of my butt–if this
new seat really works!

I agree- most unicyclists on this listserv are more than capable of making a good, informed
decision on what unicycle they want, regardless of the brand name. However, as you say later
in this post, the “marketing” is meant for people outside the current unicycling community.

Every time someone calls me about another story I try to steer them towards doing a more complex
story on the sport as a whole. This is frustratingly difficult and I’ve had limited success-
magazines seem to want to do the same story many other magazines have already done, over and over
again. For example, Germany’s GQ magazine called me yesterday and they basically want to reprint
the Arena article. Pretty boring!

-Kris.

The original post was just asking if the KH unicycle you can buy is the same
as what Kris is currently riding.

> My only question is, why haven’t we seen the John Foss model
> unicycles, and when will the John Drummond series come out?

Someday, someday. I’ve thought about it, and like Kris, I whatever unicycle
gets my name on it should be something I actually ride. But the decision to
put my name on one might involve more than that, and if it’s a good cycle,
technically that’s all that should matter. I should ride it nevertheless,
but I may ride other ones as well.

The reason Kris has the most marketable name in unicycling is that he’s the
only one of us who is known outside the unicycling community. Therein lies
the real power to grow the sport!
