Forrest asked this question in MR and it got me thinking.
Theoretically, it’s possible, if they sucked out enough blood. But mosquitoes can only suck blood from the arteries near the surface of your skin. So, if they sucked all that out, your internal organs would still be okay, just your skin would get something like a frost-bite, without all the blood. But then the blood would keep recirculating to the surface, for them to suck out more. The question would be: is the process fast enough for them to suck out enough blood to kill you?
I know, the basis of proving any theory is a test. But I’m not ready to throw any people into a swarm of hungry mosquitoes. They’re nasty little buggers. So, let’s just theorise.
If the problem was blood loss alone, then it would have to be a heck of a lot of mosquitoes.
But I think there’s more to it then that. With alllll those swelling bug bites your body would be on overload trying to fight them, with antibodies or whatever it is in your system that fights infectious bug bites. That combined with blood loss, you would probably end up going into shock and then dying.
could it happen? I don’t know… it hasn’t happen yet. Although they are responsible for more human death than any other animal bigger than themselves. They do that by giving dirty needles to the victim; not suckin’ them dry
Mosquitoes inject anti-clotting chemicals into your blood, preventing the body’s normal response. They also inject an anesthetic chemical that prevents you from feeling the bite right away.
The body’s reaction to release histamines to counter-act the mosquito chemicals is small, and gets smaller as one is bit more. After a while, the body doesn’t even react to bites.
Kinda counter-intuitive, almost incentive to get bit more, huh?
Wow! Cypriots (is that the proper term for residents of Cyprus?) have arteries near the surface of your skin and your mosquitoes go specifically for those arteries? They must also have specialized mouth parts to pierce the artery wall!
Now that’s some serious micro-evolution at work. Now, if you could train the mosquitoes to also find veins, Phlebotomists would start carrying them to help find the good ones.
I’m guessing you go camping a fair amount or at least spend a lot of time outdoors outside of Toon-town.
I usually only react to the first thousand or so bites in May then it am pretty much immune for the rest of the year.
The most mosquitoes I have ever killed in a single swat with no smearing was 48, this was on the Sturgeon Wier River near the Birch Portage IR. They haven’t killed me yet
Nice to find another Sasky on the forums, shoot me a PM if you are ever headed towards Flin-Flon and want to go for a ride
