List a saying and give your thought on whether it is actually correct, or how it needs to be construed to be correct.
For example, the saying:
“Sh*t happens.”
This saying is correct, if we mean that feces are produced, a bi-product of digestion in animals.
“That which does not kill me, makes me stronger.” - Friedrich Nietzsche 1899
This saying is incorrect. For example, John Foss does not kill me nor does he make me stronger. The sidewalk in Paris neither kills me nor makes me stronger.
In german, or better in austrian slang one would say “Wos die net umbringt, mocht die nua härta” and means that some kind of sickness or suffering that doesn’t kill you will make you stronger. So don’t be sad because you are suffering, you are still alive and will be stronger afterwards. (true for many diseases, once you had them you are immune).
To be able to say it (and have it not be a lie) you must care somewhere between ‘just barely caring’ and ‘infinitley caring’. Any sensible child could understand this yet I’ve heard many people use it when ‘I couldn’t care less’ would be correct.
On a lighter note, UK comedian David Mitchel did a funny little rant about the phrase ‘could care less’ (and hold down the fort).
As for
Maybe ‘That which does not kill me - but causes me significant mental or phisical stress that an inferior human would find mentally damaging to the point of instilling some kind of aversion to the event that caused the harm in their minds - makes me stronger.’ would be more applicable
‘Expect the unexpected.’ That’s one I’m not to sure about. Because if you expect the unexpected then the previously expected becomes unexpected. Therefore you must expect both the unexpected and the previously expected in order to be completely prepared.
Also I think that it is incorrect because no matter what you expect there is always something that you leave unexpected.
It’s the one saying I really hate because anyone who actually read it could understand what it means yet morons still say ‘I could care less’ as if it meant they weren’t bothered.
Really, really annoys me because it’s such an obvious thing to understand yet countless people still say it the wrong way.
