Is anyone using 29 inch tires?

I’m using a Continental 700 x 47 on my road unicycle, but I’m curious about the
Mutanoraptor and Nanoraptor 29ers that WTB produces. The Continental comes out
to about 28.5 inches, so I’m not sure if these larger tires (if they really are
larger) would make a noticable difference or not.

I recall someone used a WTB 29er unicycle in Red Bull a year or two ago. Has
there been much experience since then?

Re: Is anyone using 29 inch tires?

IRC Notos is good for off-road.
WTB Nanoraptor is good for road/hardpack.

A 29er works better than a Coker on very undulating off-road routes.
It’s not so hard to accelerate/decelerate.

I use 5inch cranks at the moment with a front handle for leverage for
climbing hills.
It will be even better when I get around to fitting a brake.

Has anyone found any tubes rated beyond 44mm?

David,

I’ve been using a 29 x 2.1 WTB Nanoraptor on my 26" Pashley frame. Barely any clearance with this particular frame, but a great hybrid tire. Good traction in rain and snow, on hardpack, grass, and milder trails. Relatively easy to maneuver in crowds and to stop and start quickly. Good for moderate distances of around 5-15 miles. Can keep up 8-10 mph on pavement if fully inflated, but I’m using 125 cranks. I’ll try steeper hills and more challenging trails eventually with longer cranks, maybe 170’s. I finally managed to truly idle on it this past weekend, but oddly enough, I’d never learned to idle on my 20" or 24" unis.

Hope this helps. There are others out there using the same tire (and uni)- I wonder what they’d add to this conversation.

i would like to get a 29er going but the 3mm of clearance on the Pashley isnt enough becauze i want to mount a fender.

has anyone seen the Sem 28inch frames up close and be able to say that there would be lots of space for this?

also if one knows which frame out there has the most clearance when a 700c rim with a fat 29er is empoloyed it would be helpful

RE: Is anyone using 29 inch tires?

Sorry to be slightly off-topic, but I was wondering about relative tire
sizes.

Which is bigger, 28" or 700C, or are they nominally the same thing? I ask
this question in terms of the largest diameter commonly available wheels &
tires, for a possible future category of unicycle racing.

Nobody sells 700C unicycles (yet), but there are several 28" models. Why?

Thanks,

theres a 700c uni on the web its the SEM XL light.

in most cases it seems to me that these days 28inch and 700c are one in the same.

the only time that its allways differant is when it comes to english 3 speeds (the old ones) there tires say 28 inch and are way bigger than a 28 inch of today.

tires for these old 3 spds. are very hard to find and expensive so getting one by accident is fairly remote.

Re: Is anyone using 29 inch tires?

Sizing of tyres is mad! some 700c tyres are marked at 28", I think it is
the 700c x 25 ones

All 28" unicycles available from Taiwan are actually 700c unicycles. the
Nanoraptor tyre which if I remember is 700c x 55 is called a 29" tyre by
some people others just call it 700c. They are really nice to ride.

I posted a link to a chart of sizes some time ago, I can not find it now but
it helped to explain a fair bit about this mad subject.

As far as I know (and my dad agrees) they are the same. only difference
is that 28" seems to be a more common name with unicycles and 700c is more
common with bikers (I think).

Re: Is anyone using 29 inch tires?

Nimbus II 28" frame has lots and lots of clearance for a lovely big tyre.
It’s cheap too and looks lovely, especially when it’s been powder-coated.

By the way whoever was asking, almost always nowadays 28" is the same as 29"
is the same as 700C as far as tyres and wheels are concerned.

The difference is in the tires. I’ve been using a fairly large Continental Top
Touring 700 x 47 tire. It is in fact about 41mm wide, and has a 28.5 inch
diameter.

My understanding is that the Nanoraptor (a 29er) is 700 x 52–and really is
52mm wide. I think its diameter is a bit more that 29 inches.

Jagur- Consider that you can use a frame-mounted fender on the Pashley, or any other uni. It can attach to the seat post right above the crown. Even though it would rest around 3"or more above the tire, it would still be better than a muddy butt.

David- I’ll measure the Nanoraptor width and diameter after my commute home and get back to you…

Anne

anne-ya those would work but not like a full coverage fender though.thats why i want mucho space above the tire.

Don’t know if its the most clearence, but our brand new, built up at BUC
Nimbus2 frame with a Notoss XC 29x2.1 has good clearence and is the most
agressive biggest 700c tyre the bike shop could get us with out having to
wait months and months. Boy does that uni LOOK good , black hub, frame,
cranks, pedals and saddle. Only missed the black rim because I didn’t want
to wait 4 weeks.

sara- is there any chance that a picture is available, its sounds good.i dont think the Nimbus 2 frames are in the U.S. yet for retail.

Not here. Although we are a metric country, tyre size is always quoted
in inches, also for bikes. An inch-based measure for a tyre does MEAN
something although it may be nominal and not actual, but 700c sounds
more like a code to me. Or maybe it would be millimeters diameter?
(However, 28" equals about 711 mm not 700.)

After a grueling measuring session with my Pashley last night, I determined that the 700 x 52 Nanoraptor’s fabled 29" diameter is, in fact, precisely 29". The tire is also really 52 mm wide.

Hope this dispels any lingering rumors!

Jagur,
Won’t the fenders get bent or brake during certain falls? For the fender
to be effective it would have to extend past the protection of the seat.
For example, if the seat were to fall straight backwards during a UPD,
wouldn’t the fender hit the ground before the seat? And for the fender to
be effective, it would have to extend past the point were the seat hits
the ground and the fender does not. Please explain this to me!

Dear Jagu its Sarah with an H here.
Yes there is now a photo up at

Sarah

Re: Re: Is anyone using 29 inch tires?

maybe,my fender will hit the ground for sure in a UPD.scraped up is more likly, but this will be a commuter uni not a crash happy muni

Re: Re: Is anyone using 29 inch tires?

hey,Sarah

thanx for the shed full of uni’s.i think when i build mine,i will use a 48 spoked hub just to be safe with that big circle of a wheel.

unicycle.com over here says that they are still not sure when the Nimbus2 frames will be here.
