IrfanView update

There is a new version of IrfanView out today. New version is 3.97.

I mention this because this update includes a security fix to fix a heap corruption bug. That’s the type of bug that can allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on your machine just by you viewing an image file.

Details of the vulnerability report is here.

If you’re using IrfanView I would highly recommend updating to the new version.

Thanks John. I’m glad that the program is still really quick to open. That’s one of the things I love most about it.

irfanview rocks. use it.

Sounds like a good idea but it seems hard to download the latest version. I keep getting sent to ‘mirror’ site, download that program and still can’t seem to get the Irfanview to download. What’s with that?

It will take you to Tucows for the download. I don’t really like the download process at Tucows. It’s several steps to get a download started from them. You have to click on the download link where it says “Win 95 Win 98 Win NT Win 2K”. Then it will take you to a page where you select your download location. Pick a state or a province close to you. Then the download should automatically start.

A program like IrfanView needs to use a download service like Tucows due to the large volume of downloads. If he tried to host the download on his own site the server would get overloaded and his bandwidth bill would break the bank.

…ok, I’ve got it now. I got distracted by all the stuff cluttering the download site that I choose and didn’t see the tiny wee small print that I was meant to click on as the last step to getting the download started.

I still cant find much use for this program, not enough to dl it again anyway.

Is Batch image resizing the biggest reason most of you use it? or is there some other reason to get it.

Currentlly I’m using Picasa 2 googles image viewer/ auto correcter/batch prossesing to take photos off my camera, It keeps all my photos nice and orginized with very little trouble.

So any reason I should switch?

I’ve been using IrfanView as my default image viewer for years now. It balances fast, efficient viewing with a wide range of useful image processing functions, and everything is intuitively organized and configurable to your preference. It’s light on advanced image manipulations (painting, head-swapping etc.), which are not its intended function anyway; for that stuff I have other softwares, which in turn are lousy image viewers. IV is one of the finest bits of freeware available, in my opinion.

The batch processing offers not only resizing but also most of the other functions that you can use on single images, and all of them can be applied simultaneously, so it takes a bit of setting-up. You do have to be a bit watchful when batch processing, if you’ve opted to overwrite the original files with the converted ones. A couple of times I’ve done a batch conversion without paying enough attention to my advanced options, and forgotten to unselect some setting like “Convert to greyscale” that I’d used on a previous batch.

I use IrfanView mainly because it loads so quickly.
