hey all
ive been looking into getting an ipod for a while now but as i keep putting it off they always bring out a new model woth more storage. at the moment i am most likely to get an 80gig classic. i would buy a touch ipod but they dont have them in any more than 16gig and they are over 500$.
Does anyone know if there is going to be a touch ipod with bigger storage coming out soon?
Im in South Australia so does anyone know where to get cheapest ipods in Australia?
give me your thoughts
cheers
How much music do you actually have? Are you going to fill it with video?
80 GB is huge for a portable music player.
I’m not a fan of those mini hard drives used in MP3 players. Too unreliable. Too easy to damage if/when the MP3 player gets dropped.
i have about 20gig of music right now on my computer
i would put some video on it but not whol movies
Look at Apple reconditioned iPods if you’re looking to save some money. I’m assuming you can get reconditioned iPods in Australia.
My philosophy on portable MP3 players is that hard drive based players are not the best choice for kids, teens, and 20-somethings that play hard. Flash memory based players are a better (more reliable) option for those people.
I’m also too much of a Ludite and geezer to grok the concept of keeping 80 GB of music on a portable device. I can see 80 GB of music and media in a home system. But a portable? Some people do use their iPod as a home stereo component in pretty high-end system setups. I can see that, but at the same time wonder that a notebook PC along with an external DAC would be a better home solution, especially when browsing a large media collection.
So I’m at a loss to understand the 80+ GB portable.
8 GB max in a flash based device though is constraining. 16 GB gives more room. Would be nice if Apple had a 16 GB Nano.
My idea for the future is a flash based device with 16 GB (or more) but also have a docking station that can connect to a USB external hard drive. That way you can listen to your full music collection at home while syncing with a reasonable size collection in the flash memory on the device.
i definetly want to get an ipod of some sort though because my parents have the BOSE ipod dock speakers so i will be able to use it with that
i think i will get an 80gig ipod classic
I have a 5th generation iPod 30GB, and it is great.
It is easy to use, small enough for putting in your pocket, works well.
I have about 6500 songs on it, and add more all the time. If I had to replace it, I would go for the latest 80GB one, that extra memory in a player around the same size would be great.
I like having all my music on the player, sometimes you just fancy listening to something you haven’t listened to for a while. I also use it in the car, long journeys give you a chance to listen to albums you have only listened to the odd track from recently.
The new Nanos look good, but personally, the more memory the better.

Is a iPod one of them thar new fangled cell phones? Git ya a big 'un, then.
I would recommend another product that isn’t made by Apple, for the sole purpose that Apple wants you to use their software with it just to put files on the device. Unless you run a different firmware on it, such as Rockbox.
I use an Archos 404 30gb “PMP” Personal Media Player.
I had one problem with it, and they replaced the whole unit, it was a battery issue.
I really enjoy being able to just copy and paste files onto the device rather than having to use other software to do the same task for me.
The first thing people say when they see it, “That things huge”, it’s not, it’s 30gb, an iPod with 20gb storage is the same dimensions except… it’s 1cm narrower. The Archos also has a giant display compared to the iPods with HDDs.
My 404 cost $200 in March, compared to a 20gb iPod at over $300.
For $250 you can get one with a video camera built into it.
Apple won’t tell, they very rarely pre-announce new products. If you really want to follow this you can watch the industry for “affordable” solid state memory in 32GB or more, especially coming from whoever makes the memory in the current ones. I didn’t know they had a 16GB one. If it’s recent, the next size up probably won’t hit the market for a while. But then again you never know…
I think it’s juuuust right! It all depends on two things. How much storage you need, and how you intend to use the device. I agree with John on how the HD-based players are not necessarily good for “youngsters” or people who plan to carry them everywhere. If you are, your player is much more likely to eventually suffer a HD-killing jolt.
I have a 60GB iPod and it’s nearly full. It will be full if I ever digitize all my records and cassettes. But I seldom carry my iPod around. It’s either in the Bose SoundDock at home, or in the car. And on the occasional airplane trip.
Don’t buy more storage space than you’ll need in the next year or so. By then you’ll be able to buy a bigger one for less money than you’re paying today (the same goes for any type of computer storage devices!).
If you don’t like iTunes, it’s important to realize you’ll be stuck with it unless you’re a tinkerer. The reason Apple wants you to use their software with their device is because it works really well that way. Unless you don’t like iTunes.
I’m not interested in the iPod Touch because it doesn’t have enough storage. But if you don’t need a lot of storage and especially if you plan to use it to watch lots of videos, it should be a really fun one to own. Otherwise the big screen is hardly necessary for playing music, unless you’re really into album covers.
Just wanted to say the pods are very strong atleast mine. My 30g took a 10footish fall and was fine, I have alos done much mroe to it. I do have a rubber case on it though. My nano seems to be holding up well with the thin case I have on it now. I have dropped it plenty and it is what I uniycle with now.
That’s not quite true… Just download some software such as Rhythmbox, Exaile, Amarok, or similar, and replace iTunes in a snap. I currently use Rhythmbox on my main box (running GNU/Linux, so I dunno if those previously mentioned apps are ported to Windows), and it’s all I use to sync my iPod. Plus, you have the added ability to transfer songs from your iPod to your computer. iTunes is too paranoid to have that functionality…
The shuffle holds 1 gb (300 songs) but it so micro. It’s really small. It has a built in clip on! You can stick it anywhere. And light, you don’t know it’s there.
Who needs more songs than that?. After listening to that many songs you have to recharge it anyways. Then you can change the songs.
I have a Nano with H2o proof case for the ocean. It’s Sweet, But I prefer the shuffle. Unless I have my glasses on, I can’t read the songs on the Nano.
I Love IPOD Shuffle for comfort and around town uni trips. It’s really tiny.
simple and less than $100 american dollars. which is cheap:)
Me I need more than that. I listen to a bunch of stuff and different styles and it is really annoying to want to play an album and not have it.
True. But there are freeware programs out there that can do it, so no problem. I’ve helped more than one person “restore” their music to their computers by doing this. See the thread on backing up for more info on that…
Did I mention that it’s itsy bitsy?
It’s not as itsy bitsy as the iPod Flea.
I forgot to mention, I watch videos on my MP3 player as well. The price also destroys that of the iPod.
Buttons are also a big role, I hate that click wheel thing…
You can also buy a helmet cam for the Archos players, which I think is awesome, but I’m too poor to afford one. I need one of those new fangled job things everyone is getting around my age.
Haha, John, you showed some funny in your personality!
Big draw for me of the iPod touch is that it’s also a WiFi web browser. Great for checking your e-mail at a coffee shop or whatever when you’re on vacation so you don’t have to lug your laptop around.
Good luck reading your email privately over a public WiFi network.
The current iPhone has a bug that makes VPN connections problematic. I assume the Touch will have the same problem. Without a VPN, much (if not all) of your email reading can be in the clear and easily sniffed. If you’re using web email with https (for example Gmail when you log in using https) then you’re good. Without taking some sort of precaution you can easily be broadcasting your email to anyone who wants to sniff within radio distance.
I STRONGLY !!! suggest NOT getting an ipod
i work at circuit city, as part of the training it says that the ipod has an internal battery (irreplacable) that dies after 13 months. there is apparently no way to replace them, and the warranties only cover the ipods for 12 months
i suggest getting the zune, and for the ipod touch i would suggest substituting with the creative zen or the ARCHOS player (brand slipped my mind)
