Ok so I am on the hunt for more mini ipod suggestions…this time ideas of how you have been added you ipod to your car stereo system. I’m talking about how to best use it with a disc player…no tape deck here.
Is the itrip gadget the way to go or would would it be better to get an auxilary wire with the stero player?
The iTrip seems great. My brother owns one and is very happy with it.
There are several FM transmitters that wrok with the iPod, Since distance isnt a big issue since it’ll be in your car, just buy one that isn’t too pricy, the non-apple brands work just as well.

I have no experience with the iTrip in particular, but I didn’t get on with FM transmitters in the car and it sounds like there’s a large body of people who have similar problems. The sound quality won’t be as good as if you had a wired connection. Reception can be affected by many things you won’t be able to eliminate; mine gained a high pitched whine that changed with the speed of the ventilation fan, and it sounds like interference from the engine speed is common.
I went for an aux-in converter into the back of the stereo; no noise at all, just the music from my mp3 player.
An aux-in connection has the extra advantage that you can plug other things in too; I presume the iTrip is an iPod-only gadget. The aux-in converter may well outlast the iPod and will work happily with anything else with a headphone socket.

I didn’t realise many car CD players and/or tape decks had aux sockets to plug into though.
They don’t, but I think lots of recent ones do include a socket for a CD changer; an aux-input converter plugs into this. If the stereo in question has a useable input of some sort I’d use it, but if not then the iTrip is the only option.
I’ve looked into this a while ago while researching a potential geeky project; what I’d like to do is mount a old laptop in the car, winamp playing through the stereo and the controls on the stereo controlling winamp. That’d be ace…

What I’d love to do is set up an old landline phone in the car and have it fitted with the basic mobile phone technology.

You could use one of those tapes that has a wire coming out of it and plugs into the headphone jack, unless you dont have atape player in your car.
You could use one of these adapters. Plug into your Ipod, then slip the CD into your in-dash CD player.

That would need a white cable if it’s going to sell it as an iPod accessory.
